Why Didn't They...

I suspect the production reason Kim was never promoted was because the writers weren't excited about Wang's performance.

Well, I don't think that Voyager's writers were the ones who took the decision to maintain Harry Kim as an Enseign during the whole journey but rather the producers themselves, aka Rick Berman & Brannon Braga. But I wouldn't say that Garrett Wang's weak general acting performance was the main reason but more his behavior on sets and his repeated attacks towards the production & the writers in the medias. This is not well seen to bite the hand that feeds you, right?! ;-)

-> GW declared himself in interviews to have asked to Braga why his character, Harry Kim, was still an Enseign after several years while he has "saved" the crew several times and Braga would have replied that they needed to have an Enseign in the main crew and no luck, it fell on him,.. . This is commonly referred as how to kick better for touch!
(hey, Wang even asked to Kate Mulgrew to intervene with the producers for his for his character to be promoted, as if the lead actress had some power at this level!).

Let me say that this guy is incredible: despite his laziness on sets (for which he had been sanctioned ‎at least once officially, in being suspended 1 week without being paid), Garrett Wang saw his job being saved thanks to a ridiculous poll ; he got some good episodes for his character in almost all season already shot and he still came grumbling because Harry Kim wasn't promoted?! :-O

‎It wouldn't be surprising that Garrette Wang was blacklisted after Voyager's experience and besides, he admitted implicitly this possibility in declaring that after Voyager, he had no real acting job. <grin>

He was Lt. Junior grade in season 1. When he became Chief Engineer, he was promoted to full Lt.

At the beginning of season 3, or rather the hiatus between 2 and 3, he was promoted again Lt. Cmdr., and remained that way at least until STAR TREK: NEMESIS.

Hasn't he left star fleet in the future part of "all good things"?

Since that future didn't happen, or at the very least is not going to happen the same way due to the Enterprise's destruction, I don't count that.

Same with his appearance in the future as Captain in VOYAGER's "TIMELESS".

Geordi becomes captain of a galaxy class, then meets a woman who both looks like Leah Brahms, and has the same name, then settles down with wife and kids, and begins writing detective novels.

And Data gets skunk hair.

This is the second thread I have come across within a week that sets up an opportunity to simply bash the series as a whole. It's becoming as predictable as my complaints about sexism. And what is even worse is that there no "Why Didn't They . . . ?" threads for the other Trek shows. And if you try to tell me that they didn't deserve or need such a thread, then I cannot help but wonder if the majority of the Trek fandom is either sexist or full of shit.

Excuse my french, but data(at Cambridge) had become....an a**hole

Well, maybe not completely. He keeps a housekeeper that doesn't hesitate to criticize him and doesn't give his houseguests the beverages that they ask for.

I think his housekeeper is a hologram, programmed to be ornery. It's all for Data's image and vanity.

It's possible, though thanks to the doctor's influence even holograms would have gotten some rights by then.

Yeah I noticed that too. It all seems rather redundant to me as there are no do-overs and I love the original Voyager myself. Like with a new series, eg: Discovery they are still creating it so suggestions make sense, not that they will mean anything. Existing shows are done and dusted and you know what really amuses me?? Some of the suggestions of what Voyager could have done would have turned it into a show that I would not have personally liked! It would be a mini-DS9 or something equally unecessary  Still I figure people love talking Voyager so there is that...

In Juggernaut why didn't they give Vessik their technology for recycling? The first Malon we met didn't want it because he was profiting from dumping, but Vessik seemed to be doing it to help his home. I think he would be very receptive to a new way of dealing with their waste.

It's a rule in Star Trek: They can't use twice the same plot device.

Why was Kim treated so poorly as becoming the whipping boy of the senior staff? Why was Tom Paris given so much slack?
These are questions that are never answered, especially not by the biggest fans of the series.

Well Janeway did have little baby lizards with Paris. Harry, not so lucky. Maybe Janeway felt she owed Paris something. Lol

Owed him? He ran off with her if I recall. :D Maybe she felt she owed him after Counterpoint when she bent/broke whatever, for the telepaths within a short span of demoting him? *shrugs*

Discofan: It has been answered by the production team. They wanted a senior staff ensign on the call sheet and that sucker was Wang. There is no logic for this case.

Once again I feel like a person's behind the scenes behavior may have impacted their character development. Want was frequently late to the set and was even suspended from an episode (or was it more than one)

Though I think he's tried to justify the lateness by saying other actors' costume changes or something like that made him late.
