Why didn't JJ watch every episode before writing this movie?

We all know that legendary legend Nicholas Meyer watched every episode of TOS possibly up to three times before writing and directing Star Trek 2: the Wroth of Kahn. This meant that the movie was ENTIRELY consistent to Star Trek in every way as well as being a great action movie that we all know and love.

Meyer wanted to do a good Trek movie properly, and succeeded. Abrams just wants to do a movie, and doesn't care if the end result is proper Trek.

Well....because obviously as the director, he should not know anything about the property.

It keeps him fresh.

Am I being sarcastic?

Only God knows and Kirk punched him in the face for talking.

Nope. Relax man, I was just cracking a joke about your back and forth with Dale. In point of fact, I agree with you.

Can I introduce you to one of the members of the writing team. Robert Orci. Screenwriter... Trekkie....
John Logan said he was a Trekkie too, but NEM still sucked. And if Orci objected at all to any of the changes Abrams wanted, either he wasn't persistent enough in talking him out of it, or it was always a goal of his to reboot the franchise.

Um and Nimoy didn't exactly throw the script back at him in disgust.
He didn't throw the script for ST5 away in disgust either, and he got paid a lot less for that one.

Seems that being a Trekkie won't make the movie good or not being a Trekkie make the movie bad.

Wasn't it Harve Bennett who watched all the TOS episodes before TWOK?

Seems to me, JJ's right and proper concern is first and foremost making a good movie. The mentality that there is a 'proper way to make a Trek film/tv show' is a hinderence not a help to the property it has bred staleness.

Just make it good - and judging from what's been said by those who aren't myopic 'fans' he likely did exactly that.

Post a source for that? I doubt that there's any truth to it.

Oh, and it's "Wrath of Khan" not "Wroth of Kahn."

Why didn't JJ watch every episode before writing this movie?

First, he didn't write this movie.

Why didn't he watch every episode before directing this movie?

Because he has a life. And because he didn't need to.

Why didn't JJ watch every episode before writing this movie?

Because he's the most awesomest director that evar lived.

...with apologies to McG and Ratner, right?
The guy that did Swamp Thing also.

Because he's the most awesomest director that evar lived.

And Tom Cruise is SUPER COOL, right?:vulcan:
Only because he's been in a movie directed by JJ.

Yeah, it was Harve Bennett who watched all the episodes and came up with the story for TWOK. I believe Meyer was conditionally hired as director and fixed up the script, written by Jack B. Sowards, all with in a very short amount of time. Something like 5 days, which wouldn't be enough time to watch the whole series once, let alone 3 times. All he knew before hand about Star Trek was that it was the show with that guy with pointy ears. He was concerned primarily with making a good movie, not necessarily a proper Trek movie. Then again all my information comes from his Directors Commentary tracks, but I suppose Meyer could have been lying when he stated these things. Or drunk. Or maybe I was.

If Abrams wasn't interested in Trek in some way shape or form he would never have agreed to make this movie. He's not a film maker needing to ride the coat tails of something else to achieve sucess. He's had quite a nice career already for the past 15 years or so.

Anyway, just ask some posters around here, like The God Thing, how Meyers, Bennett and Nimoy destroyed Star Trek. No matter how much I do enjoy TWOK and a lot of Trek that's come after TMP they do have some valid points. And I must say that although I'm disappointed that things have as gotten to the point where a movie like this is necessary in order to breath some life into Trek, I'm excited at the prospect that I may actually enjoy some new Star Trek for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Well it might not have been a bad idea for someone to have watched all of the original episodes. Then we might not have to wonder about things like why Kirk had such a problem figuring out how to drive the car in 'A Piece Of The Action', when we know damned well that he had absolutely no problem in his youth, handling a vehicle far faster and more sophisticated than that old jalopy. Then again, going by the implied conclusion of that little joy ride, perhaps it explains better than ever that just maybe Spock should have driven.
