Why didn’t Spock just stun both kirks In whom god’s destroy

It would of been easier if Spock just stunned both kirks as Garth would of just turned back into Garth and Kirk would of just been stunned

Getting hit with a phaser stun is probably like getting knocked out with a punch to the jaw. It would be a bigger deal when you can feel it than two-dimensional characters make it look. You don't want to stun the captain.

But if I wrote the scene, it would go like this:

SPOCK: "The captain and I had a working breakfast on Tuesday. Which crewman's name came up in regard to the disturbance on Deck 6?"

Before Kirk could answer, Garth would attack, and you'd still have your Big Fight.

That's why Nimoy was so unhappy with the scene. If Spock had half a brain, there would be any number of simple questions that only Kirk would know. It was just lazy writing, a disservice to the Spock character.

During the operation to restore Spock’s Brain, Dr. McCoy accidentally sneezed. After that medical mishap Spock did all sorts of wacky things.

The scene overall was just kinda lazy I can see why nimoy was unhappy with it

The Cochran Deceleration thing was the worst. Yeah, it's a classic battle maneuver that every ship captain knows, but Spock shouldn't have accepted that because how would Garth know that's the maneuver Kirk picked? But if you watch carefully, Garth is the one who answered correctly.

A lot of this scene could have been salvaged if Garth said he studied Kirk's record once he captured him.

What could have worked for me: Spock sees both, blithely sets the phaser to stun and pulls the trigger.

Nothing. Not even the guards were trusted with phasers. Now Spock has to use logic. Spock asks a question only Kirk knows. Kirk responds, Garth immediately kicks the chair towards Spock, who falls against the wall, momentarily stunned. Kirk/Garth grapple, Garth gets the upper hand. Spock approaches, Garth turns, Kirk kicks Garth who stumbles, Spock nerve pinches Garth into sleepy time.

Pretty much the same scene, just without the dumbing down of everyone involved.

It's the first episode without Bob Justman. No coincidence.

That would of made a lot more sense then what we got

It’s water under the bridge now, but I really wish that Bob Justman would have been named Producer for S3. He was with GR and TOS from the beginning and his dedication to the series was legendary. Too bad the studio suits didn’t think he was capable of leading the show.

Maybe it was Justman again who said TOS did an episode with children in S1 that was similar to S3’s And The Children Shall Lead. They must have needed shootable scripts very badly during Freiberger’s tenure as producer.
Freiberger was the downfall of season 3 I think if they just let justman have full control over it it could of been saved

Nah, the timeslot change, the slashed budget and the shorter shooting schedule - along with Roddenberry leaving - was the downfall. But I don't think anyone could have saved the series with those handicaps.

If Margaret Armen’s anecdote about Fred Freiberger’s interpretation of what Star Trek is all about is true, then I blame FF for derailing the Starship Enterprise.

Seems like death by a thousand cuts.

But Year 3 is mostly great. If you ever watch Year 2 of Lost in Space, you will understand that Year 3 of Star Trek was absolute gold.
