Why did TOS:R recreate crappy effects?

So, pretty much exactly to refute "Hey, there's only a dozen shots."

I may have said this previously, but I love your site.

Out of curiosity, what is the final count in terms of unique shots of the Enterprise model? A dozen seems too small, but unless this head cold is worse than I thought (a distinct possibility) it looks like there were only 2-3 dozen unique shots by the end of the series (and, really, by the end of season two).

I made that catalog because I went back and forth between "Wow there is a lot of re-used footage" and "Wow there's a lot more to this than I expected!" It still amazes me that they made it through all of season three without any new shots of the Enterprise. (Well, they pulled one new shot out of the box that they had never used.)

So, pretty much exactly to refute "Hey, there's only a dozen shots."

Looks to be ~53 if you drop the shots of the Constellation, so about four and a half dozen.

Folks, I'm blushing. Really. I don't want to hijack the thread more than I have, but you have got me thinking about making some updates to the old list. I have blu rays now and I'd also like to include video.

I heard an interview with someone (not Okuda) involved with Remastered talking about the project and they dismissed re-doing the original shots kind of out of hand. They were going on the "only a dozen shots" theory.

I've said elsewhere: I'd kind of like to see different takes on remastering for each episode. One being a "just clean it up and make it HD" and then a companion "GO CRAZY and do whatever would be cool now!" version.

I'd only want to see this if they were given a sizable budget and timetable to work with. Even then, I would want them to get input from folks who are experts in the effects of the time period.

The trouble was that those scenes where the ship was bobbing back and forth like on a wire (utterly ridiculous, even for the day) would need to be completely recreated with more appropriate ship movement.

I was watching a promotional video for an upcoming documentary on the episode "The Doomsday Machine" and there was a shot over head of the Enterprise where we see a damaged sister ship. It's floating around in space like there was air, bobbing around. It was terrible to watch.

But the history of cinema and television doesn't necessarily support the "old versions still exist, we can still watch them" idea. Is NetFlix offering the original VFX? Is syndication? No. The de facto standard now is the altered version ergo you have to make an effort to find the originals, which requires physical media of a specific format to get it. It's not a big step from there to the originals effectively disappearing.

No, I've got the original versions on disc. Actually, both on DVD and blu ray. Love the blu rays because you can choose the version. I usually watch with the original SFx, but did check out all of the newer effects.

When you're changing the entire look of something, you are rewriting its history. I know some folks seem to be okay with it, but it doesn't change what it is.

You're right--it's a visual re-imagining that is set in the same timeline. The showrunners have described it as that, and that's what we got. That's what it is, and no amount of whining is going to change it!

Really, I don't have a problem with it. TOS is still TOS. I like how Disco is set slightly earlier in that timeline, but you can certainly pretend it's a reboot or whatever floats your boat. Or, not watch it of course.

I quit watching. But, none of the changes would've been deal breakers if the show wasn't so dull and derivative of what came before. Heck, Burnham has already accomplished more than Spock in one season of Discovery than he did in the entirety of his appearances.

She mutinied first, fought the Klingons first, interacted with the Mirror universe first, time traveled first, hero of the Federation first. I feel overly moist from all the fanwank juices they squirted out in the first season.

She was also the reason Sarek and Spock didn't speak to each other, was a first officer first, was in line for her own command first...

Now they will likely rescue Spock and the Enterprise.

It feels like they are going out of their way to trivialize what TOS was.

Well, that's your personal opinion. Mine is totally different. However, I respect your decision. Nothing will be liked by everyone, and Discovery is no different.

I don't think it does that any more than Smallville, which recreated most of the same scenarios, trivialized the Superman movies.

But then I don't try and reconcile it with classic Trek any more than Smallville fits with Superman so...

Thanks for the spoiler! I am only a few episodes in and have purposely NOT read anything about DISCO so that I enjoy it. Please keep in mind that not everyone has seen the show yet (particularly since this is NOT a DISCO thread).
