Why did they turn Gowron into a dick?

Garak007

I am not talking about when he turned the Klingon Empire against the Federation. That was understandable as he believed that they were helping the Cardis what they thought they were harbouring Founders which he was ultimate right anyway

Now Gowron worked with the Federation, on really got terms with Picard. Sisko and Worf pissed him off in WOTW but he knew when to stop and he grants them safe passage through Klingon space when the DS9 crew brought to his attention that General Martok was a Founder.

Did Robert O'Reilly wanted out of the series or something? because I thought it was a big change of character for him to have behave like a dick. His pisses of both Martok and Worf to a point where Worf had to challenge him and ends up killing him.

In TNG 'Unification, Part One', the good terms between Gowron & Picard degraded to the point that Picard had to threaten Gowron's standin' to simply get one ship with a cloak for the misson to Romulus.

Gowron had always been kind of a dick.

And, considerin' that Robert O'Reilly agreed to guest star in the "final chapter" of episodes, did it really matter if he wanted out of the series or not? The series was endin', with or without him.

Gowron was something of a dick long before then. Long before. Redemption--Gowron wouldn't give back Worf his family's honor because the Council knew of the deceit and would have been too powerful for Gowron to stand alone. Gowron wussed out then and refused to answer the challenege of destiny that he had the chance to do. Doesn't sound too honorable and "Klingon" to me. Just another politician wanting power without having to look over his shoulder.

Ezri called it like it was in "Tacking into the Wind." Gowron was no different than the rest. Fortunately, Worf followed his sense of honor and took up the challenge and did something about it. Now there's a real Klingon.

Gowron was even a trifle pricklish in his very first appearance, "Reunion". Hell, in "Kahless" - where his opinion is entirely vindicated - he still comes off as something of a jerk.

When you get down to it, Gowron always was a rather slimy, slippery political breed of Klingon interested in consolidating his power first and foremost. But, hey, he wasn't the House of Duras, and he was the best contender against the House of Duras, so he was a natural choice for an ally for Worf in his fight against that Klingon group.

Gowron was a politician who could handle himself well in a fight. He never had any honor though; it was always about personal glory with him. The only thing good that can be said about him was that he was a lot better than that pathetic weasel, Duras.

Why did they "turn" him into a dick?! They didn't, he was always a dick. In his first appearance, in TNG "Reunion", he tried to bribe K'Ehleyr to support him as chancellor against Duras, then when that did not work, tried to threaten her, saying she could end up like the previous chancellor, K'mpec. K'mpec had been poisoned, and we never found out who poisoned him, but this seems like at least a heavy hint that it was Gowron.

Dammit! I want Star Trek: Cardassian! But I suppose that unlike the simplistic Klingons, we are too difficult to boil down into these sorts of easy choices... ;)

What about Martok? Or Kahless? Grilka? Gorkon? The dude who ran the restaurant on the Promenade? They weren't bad guys, or girls in some cases.

What's with the board's rampant anti-Klingoness? Or is it just my imagination that it's there.

There is an anti-Klingon faction here, SilentP. I always likeD the Klingons. For the most part, they're refreshingly direct. As others have said, Duras was a dick from the beginning, just not as big a dick as Duras. -- RR

I'm not sure you meant to use Duras twice, but since there was an Enterprise one and a TNG one, the statement may still be valid.

Dick Durases...not to be confused with Dick Durock.

I think being a dick is a family trait for them :p

And yes, the Klingons are refreshingly direct. Maybe that's the aspect people have a problem with. All these races with alterior motives, hidden agendas, incomprehensible goals, who aren't always completly open, and admired for being so (guess which race I mainly refer to ;)) a race that is bluntly honest about it's desires, and goes about them directly, is perhaps frowned upon?

I think he meant to say Gowron, but considering the high levels of douce and fail within the House of Duras, any Klingon fan would think Klingon douche/dick/insult=Duras. :p

I didn't like what they did with Worf, his brother, or Gowron in DS9, although there were some other redeemable Klingon episodes in the series overall I didn't like the way they handled Klingons in DS9.

I think the Klingons are crass, shallow, and bloodthirsty, for the most part, and that their so-called "honor" is a sham. The one major exception is Worf, who lives the ideal and not the reality.

Understand I think MY favorite race has its flaws. Major ones. But I think they are much more fascinating than the Klingons, myself.
