why did they fly into the sun at the end of ST 6?

It has never once occurred to me in all these years that anyone might think that they were literally flying into the sun.

"Riding off into the sunset" is a well-known cliche.

The kids these days don't remember Westerns. If less epic, the final song to Star Trek 6 could have been "Happy Trails To You".

Well if you're decommissioning a ship that's a clean way to do it I guess, saves man power etc if you're not wanting any of the components.

As long as you evacuate the crew first of-course.

i never understood that. why would captain kirk willingly fly the enterprise in the sun and destroy the ship?! was he mad that starfleet was ordering them to get decommissioned, so he he figured hed just destroy the enterprise in a fit of rage? if so i dont blame him.

So well known a cliche that when the Enterprise D did it at the end of "A Fistful of Datas", I wondered if that was intended to be the last episode of the series.

When I was 6 years old, watching TNG for the first time, I thought the intro ended with the ship blowing up.

At the end of Wrath of Khan Spock's coffin dwindles in the distance to a spot of light and passes behind the edge of the Genesis Planet. And then the star/sun of that system rises from behind the same spot on the edge of the Genesis Planet looking like Spock's coffin turned into a star. And I have heard that some people thought that was what happened. :guffaw:

^ Dare I admit I once had a Roy Roger lunchbox?

Yes, I'm that that old. :)
Roy Rogers? Oh, you mean that guy with the fast food joints at turnpike rest stops?

(just kidding... my dad's a huge fan of old cowboy movies, so you'd better believe I know who the King of the Cowboys was)

"Second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning" was the direction Peter Pan gave to Wendy on how to find Neverland.

The Enterprise heading to the second star to right moment I felt the the crew had other adventures I'll never see, but the next film will be TNG. The sun light immerses the screen didn't mean the crew committed suicide because they couldn't have their way.

They flew AROUND the sun. See, ST VII never got made, but they went back in time again to save a pair of Dodo's so the future would have tastier omelettes.
