i never understood that. why would captain kirk willingly fly the enterprise in the sun and destroy the ship?! was he mad that starfleet was ordering them to get decommissioned, so he he figured hed just destroy the enterprise in a fit of rage? if so i dont blame him.

Funny but its created a notion id never considered before.. riding off into the sunset is an established motif of a closing chapter (e.g Westerns, end of Indy Last Crusade) so that's the conclusion to the 'Wagon Train to The Stars' thing. ok we already knew that... but in Trek flying to the sun means ...time travel.. Meyer likes all the lofty meaningful stuff (and was involved In IV) so perhaps that was Meyers very subtle nod to the crew metaphorically going back in time to the beginning of their adventures.. as in they will live on in their past adventures. Sort of a 'the end is the beginning' type thing..

Unfortunately, when Kirk said "second star to the right" he didn't realize that the Khitomer sun met that definition, and the Enterprise was annihilated in a ball of flame while our heroes died a slow, agonizing death.

It really does look pretty stupid, when you see the ship heading "into" the sun like that and somebody, surely, would've noticed during them cutting the picture together. I guess they want that "heading off into the sunset" feel but that's not what it gives off. It's kind of laughable and then the autographs start flying and it's like "WTF."
