Why did Spock wear a beard on the second season of Disovery?

Just as interesting as it is that in most of these cultures, men all have short hair and women long hair.

The only other bearded Vulcan I recall seeing outside of the mirror universe is Sybok, who rejected mainstream Vulcan logic. Perhaps Spock's beard in STDisco was meant as a visual signifier to the audience that he was questioning logic on some level.

There's a Vulcan with a beard in a flashback in Star Trek 5.

Of course, how could I forget the healer who sounded like James Doohan with a head cold. I never noticed the one in TFF flashback though. I'll have to give that another viewing soon.

I think Ethan Peck Spock looks better with the beard than without. The beard hides the face, so it makes me not constantly think, "You're not Leonard Nimoy!" It's not Ethan Peck's fault, but my mind goes to that by default unfortunately. Then they shaved his face and left him with those awful sideburns, which they still can't get right.

Long story short: I'm glad Disco Spock had the beard.

Spock's SNW sideburns are mental... How hard is it to get 'triangular' right? Instead we get sideburns that look like something Jack Skellington would prance around on.

For that matter, Spock looks like he's wearing eye shadow in a fair number of TOS episodes. Maybe Vulcan ideas about aesthetics don't fit Euro-American Human ideas about gender roles. ;)
In Star Trek Into Darkness, Spock wears his TOS eyeshadow on the mission to Kronos. He doesn't wear it at any other time in the movie, making it canon that it is makeup he's wearing in that scene and by extension, all of TOS.

You're welcome.

I actually wonder why Vulcans would shave at all. It's not logical to devote several minutes a day to a purely cosmetic procedure.
Body hair traps sweat, grime and bacteria. Therefore, for a society that values cleanliness like the Vulcans do, shaving would be logical.

In universe, he was not in a position to shave.
From a production point of view, probably as a visual signifier that he isn’t quite the same as he is in TOS.
