Well, that certainly is an opinion.
As he told Captain Pressman in The Pegasus, he got tired of people telling him how young he looked.
Maybe he was also trying to impress Troi.

I can't stand beards, but it really did improve his appearance and give him more of a commanding look.

To the person talking about James Marsters, what exactly do you mean by a "weak" chin? If nothing else, Riker's beard lead to some great Q lines like:
"Riker, you're so stolid...you weren't like that before the beard!" and in response to Amanda's crush on him - "You're attracted to him! How can you stand all that hair on his face?".

As in, not a strong, prominent chin. He looked much better with the beard.

I'm always struck by how different Frakes looked before the beard. The beard definitely made him look more mature and authoritative, indeed you could say it made him Riker!

Speaking as someone with a bit of a weak chin, I'll I can say is that a beard makes a world of difference. Mind you, I look like a truck driver - but a handsome truck driver, at that!
