Why did Dr. Korby commit suicide?

If Christine decides she does not want an android, that is a perfectly acceptable exercise of personal choice, not racism, and she does not deserve criticism for it.

Well said. the notion of trying to refer to a manufactured object as a race is utter nonsense, and speaks to a terrible misunderstanding of the classification.

"Race" is not actually part of any classifications. It's not a scientific concept.

If you are sentient, if you can form relationships with others, I am willing to consider you a life form. I am willing to consider Korby-bot and Data life forms. If a human marries an android and is perfectly happy in her choice, I am certainly not going to tell her she's not married to a person.

But Chapel should not be criticized for not wanting to be with an android. I may decide not to marry someone because she is blonde and not brunette. I may decide I do not wish to be married to a Vulcan or a Klingon or an Andorian or a Horta, and I feel perfectly justified in my decision. If Christine decides she does not want an android, that is a perfectly acceptable exercise of personal choice, not racism, and she does not deserve criticism for it.

I believe Chapel's motives can be questioned. After all people have been sued for breaking up relationships under suspicious circumstances. So why not here?

I don't know, she seemed to dump him because he went from guy who wouldn't hurt a fly to willing to commit murder and planing to take over the galaxy. So already coming off as different from the guy she was planing on marrying.

The really being an android thing just seems to add to that by making you wonder if the personality changes were a result of being a degraded copy instead of the actual Dr. Korby.

And bingo was his name-O.

Which makes its use in reference to a piece of plastic more ridiculous than previously considered. He's not a race, a species or anything else, other than an manufactured object.

The only thing I am saying is that the same can be said of Data.

^ Data must be a far more advanced android than any of these ones are. Korby and his ilk seem to operate from a rigid, pre-planned set of instructions with absolutely no moral guidance or empathy for others (witness Brown's total apathy when he witnesses a redshirt's death). Data, OTOH, is a highly moral being who is capable of his own sense of good judgment. His programming, if you can call it that, seems to be on a whole different level than these Korbots.

Honestly I feel the difference is the same one between The Doctor from Voyager and a Holonovel character.

Data and the Doctor are their own person/android/hologram/whatever with their own goals and desires, and are capable of growing and changing.

Korby and the Holonovel characters are just simulations of people basically designed to around a script they can't change and slaved to their programming.

Honestly it just seems that in the trek universe brain uploading doesn't work and only results in a defective copy.

I thought it was starfleet standard procedure when one witnesses a redshirt's death...

In the final scenes of "What are Little Girls Made Of?" Dr. Roger Korby, confronted by his own failings and his less than human nature now that he inhabits an android body, commits suicide while smooching the android Andrea.

Umm, technically Korby doesn't kill himself. It's Andrea who pushes the trigger. You know, the 'droid who just killed one of her brothers-in-artificial-arms by mistake and was trying to cope with the fact that she was now an accredited murderer. Plus with the whole kissing thing.

So we can debate whether Korby wanted that to happen (that is, his hand helps Andrea's in pressing the trigger), or whether he wanted nothing of the sort and only too late realized that Andrea was holding that gun (that is, his hand makes that realization but is too slow to do anything about it).

Timo Saloniemi

I always believed that their self-disintegration was an accident. I still do. (Good lord, once Andrea smooches you, you have so much to live for!) ;)

I don't know if Andrea is nothing more than an automaton then it's almost as bad as doing it with an inflatable doll...

So many things that could be said...

I don't think it was the potential lack of sexual fulfillment that led Dr. Korby to commit suicide.

What if it wasn't suicide at all but just a malfunction? Like when your computer burns itself up because of bad ventilation, for example?

But since Korby was an android too, it was more like Ken/Barbie. :p

Hmmm.... if Dr. Korby bot was hung like a Ken doll, no wonder Christine didn't want any.
"Smooth" as a Ken Doll you mean.:guffaw:

Besides, what would an android working on elecricity need a penis for? No fluids to evacuate.

It's interesting to see Sherry Jackson on Gomer Pyle, USMC. In What are Little Girls Made Of?, she says "You must be Captain Kirk, of the starship Enterprise. On Gomer Pyle, in the exact same intonation, she says "You must be Gomer." Interesting contrast!
