Given that the relationship between Terry Farrell and the producer had soured so much that she was definitely going to leave, I think the writers handled it well. You have a symbiont that can be rejoined if a host dies, so they took the opportunity to show that instead of just talking about it. Otherwise, why would Jadzia leave, in the middle of the war? Or I suppose they could have killed Dax along with Jadzia, but I don't see anyone liking that more.
