Why aren't there real superheroes in the world?

We do have superheroes. They may not wear masks unless changing diapers but Moms and Dads are superheroes. Especially the stay-at-home ones.

I'm not sure a class of folk numbering in at least hundreds of millions can be considered "super".

There aren't more Superheroes in the real world because the real world is full of boring mundanes. That's why we have Art & Literature. People crave something more exotic and colorful. Well, maybe not the current generation, but usually....

Also, the kind of accidents and special circumstances that give rise to superhero powers are just impossible IRL. Marvel's Ruins is an example of more realistic, and often very sad, outcomes of things like this...
