Why Admiral Paris was Played by Two Actors

There is one scene were Janeway ends a conversation with Neelix and says "Dismissed! That's Starfleet's way of saying ,get out!" I think that might be what people are thinking off.

Its almost as if the writers were idiots who had no respect for continuity or their audience.

We need to have these words turned into an animated gif, for general use in every thread. ;)

I know they go back and forth about whether or not the book Pathways is canon or not but it was written by Jeri Taylor who helped create the character. His backstory included a dad, mom and two sisters.

Then again it had different details about his life changing accident...so make of it what you will.
I find "Pathways" canon because Jeri Taylor was one of the people in charge when she wrote the book.

I find "Pathways" a good book even if I dislike Jeri Taylor's ways of sugar-coating certain things, especially certain family relations. The bad relation between Chakotay and his father was really sugar-coated. In the series, Chakotay told the "Sky Spirit" that he and his father Kolopak had a bad relationship when Kolopak died but in the book, those issues had been solved. Even more strange is that we never got to know why Tom Paris and his father never got along while there were many hints in the series that Owen Paris was something of a house tyrant who treated Tom like s**t.

Even Janeway's relation to her father came out as complicated in the book "Mosaic" and B'Elannas problems to adapt to human customs and life on the planet where she lived when she was a small kid, her rebellious attitude at Starfleet Academy, her bad temper and so were not because of her Klingon heritage but.......due to her relationship with her father who left the family when Belanna was very young! Oh dear! :sigh:

As for the accident which changed Tom's life, I find it too close to the one his dear ringer Nick Locarno had in the TNG episode "The First Duty". They6 should have come up with something more different than that. Still, the description of the events in "Pathwways" are good and plausible.

And here is my theories about Tom Paris, Nick Locarno and the two "Owen Parises":

Tom Paris-Nick Locarno

Now, this has caused a lot of confusion. Nick Locarno, a Tom Paris lookalike is involved in an accident similar tothe one Tom was involved in later. That "coincident" has created a lot of rumors and speculation. There are:

Two possible solutions

Solution 1: Nick Locarno was the result of a a love affair between Admiral Paris and another woman than his wife. The old Admiral helped Nick Locarno to be accepted at Starfleet Academy where he screwed it up. The similar accidents Nick and Tom had were coincidents. Tom's hatred to his father was because he found out about Nick Locarno's existence during his time at Starfleet Academy. A possible meeting between Tom and Nick would be something for coming books or movies, wouldn't it.

Solution 2. Tom Paris and Nick Locarno are twins separated at birth. The similarity between the accidents are coincidents, however Admiral Paris did his best to cover up the relationship between Nick Locarno and the Paris family. Tom did find out about it later which is one of the reasons he despises his father.

Two Admiral Paris's in the show

As we could see, the Owen Paris who did show up in the later seasons didn't look the same as the Owen Paris we saw in the season 2 episode "Persistance Of Vision".

The reason for that is that the guy which was seen in the later episodes wasn't Owen Paris but a relative.

That was a result of the "Nick Locarno" affair.

Nick Locarno was the result of an affair between Owen Paris an a woman named Esmeralda Locarno who was not his wife.

Owen Paris tried to keep the whole thing a secret. He helped Nick to join the Academy. It was when Tom found out about this, he really started to hate his father.

When Nick screwed up and was kicked out of the Academy, Owen Paris continued to cover up his involvement in the affair.

In later years, Owen could not stand it any longer and got a nervous breakdown. During his absence and due to the fact that Starfleet Headquarters wanted to cover up everything that had been going on for a long time, Owen's brother Ichabod Paris served as his "stand in" at Starfleet Headquarters until Owen was well enough to return to his job.

So the guy who showed up as Admiral Paris in the later episodes was Ichabod Paris.

I don't understandy why this is a question. They weren't able to get the same actor for whatever reason so they got another one. Happens all the time. Gul Dukat's daughter was played by at least 3 different acctresses.
But you must admit that my attempts to explain why this character here looks so different from what he/she was before and that character there looks exactly like that character in that episode is more funny and constructive than just the ordinary "oh, that's another actor" reply.

I thought the two actors actually looked and otherwise came off pretty similar, especially since PoV was a hallucination and, OTOH, "Thirty Days" was just a year before "Pathfinder". I also didn't think the second actor/version was that avuncular, mostly just in comparison to the intermediate officer (Barclay's direct superior).
