Why a Female Changeling?

Because it would be waaaay creepier and because she could then have (TPTB approved) sex with Odo. Which I have to say made my skin crawl.

Because she was trying to influence Odo and figured that if she had to mimic one gender, female would be the more "influential." ;)

Odo most likely could manifest a femme appearance should he choose too. Odo does seem to possess a male gender identity. While he might simply have been imitating Doctor Mora's basic appearance initially, given the number of years there would have been plenty of time for Odo to adopt a female shape if Odo was a psychological female within his person.

Because Salome Jens did such a good job as the "seed the galaxy" lady they thought she'd do a good job?

Yup. Odo did the female Founder (in the non-traditional way) in the episode when they stole the bug ship with the Breen energy dampening weapon aboard.

I also agree that the so-called female founder took that form because it was determined that Odo could most be reached by a founder who appeared female. As to them doing the wild thing, I'd rather imagine my parents doing it. Yuck!

The Changelings told Odo that they used to be like the solids and most solids shown on Trek have a male and a female gender, so it was a 50/50 chance.

They made the founder female so it would be slighty (slighty!) less ooky when we saw Odo have changeling sex. Although, if they had such a problem with male-on-male linking, why did they have Odo link with Laas in season 7? Especially when he was in a committed relationship with Kira at the time? Weird.

That was linking. Linking isn't sex. Probably a lot more intimate than sex but not sex as solids do it (and as tv censors it).

When Odo had sex with the female changeling it was just that.. sex. They made themselves into solid form just like they do when they turn into birds or rocks.. solid humanoid form with the requisite bits to have actual sex. This is why we see them sitting on the end of the bed after the event having a post coital discussion.

Odo and Lass turned into goo and melted together. Odo and the female changeling imitated humanoid sex with imitated humanoid genitals.

:barf:

teacake, the thing that makes me think linking is a kind of "sex" is a conversation Odo had with Arissa (the first woman he had ever had humanoid-type sex with). He was explaining to her that she was his first time, and then he sort of ammended that, talking about what he and the Female Founder had done on their homeworld. Linking seems to be a very intimate act, even if you don't slap the "sex" label on it.

Also, when the Female Founder did it with Odo (yeah I know, gag, vomit), she said, "So that is how the Solids experience intimacy," indicating that she equated the intimacy of linking with the intimacy of sex, at least in some way.

Oh, but I do agree with your disgust when Odo and the Female Founder ... umm ... did it humanoid style? Ewww. I actually have a whole little story about that.

I was, I think, a freshman in high school when that episode came out. I was on a three-way phone call with two of my friends who were also avid trekkies (both teen girls like me, contrary to popular stereotypes). Since it was a school night and we couldn't have a sleep-over or anything like that, this was our way of watching/commenting on the show together. When we realized what she and Odo had done it, there was a chorus of "Ewww! Gross!" "With her?" "Oh my god, no they didn't!" Looking back, our reactions of disgust make me giggle. Not that we were wrong to be disgusted, but it was just funny. I mean, the rest of the girls were probably watching Dawson's Creek or something, you know.

I don't know if it's just me but I find it really funny that the reaction to Odo and the female Founder is universal disgust. They may as well have shown us a couple of sweaty Packleds rolling around.

LOL, StarryEyed, well you know, Female Founder was such a manipulative bitch, I think everyone pretty much hated her. Poor Salome Jens!

But the natural state of the Changelings is the Great Link. So if you think that linking is sex, then surely you must think that Changelings are constantly having those huge sex orgies involving millions and millions of them? :wtf:   So if that is what they are doing, why would you be bothered by Odo linking, sorry, "having sex" with Laas? :guffaw:

Seriously, linking is not sex. Odo compared it to sex because sex,out of the experiences he had up to that point, came the closest to the kind of intimacy he knew in linking, though it was still not the same thing for many reasons. It is clear that Changelings find it natural to link with each other all the time, and there is nothing exclusive, romance-related, reproductive, or erotic in the humanoid sense about it. Linking is as natural for Changelings as conversation is for humans. Having that kind of reaction to linking would be like an alien race, which only have conversations with those they are extremely intimate with, being grossed out at humans always talking to each other, and likening it to a giant orgy.

As for the disgust at Odo and FF having sex, I was not exactly disgusted, but it certainly was not very appealing, but mostly because of their post-coital reactions: both seemed indifferent, and FF even straight out said she found solid sex poor and unsatisfactory. It was obvious neither of them had enjoyed it, and it was more of an experiment/learning experience that Odo gave her, which I guess was the point. But Odo clearly had enjoyed solid sex with the woman from A Simple Investigation whose name escapes me, so the fact that he did not seem to enjoy it with FF is telling.

:guffaw:OMG, now every time I hear "Great Link," I am gonna think, "Changeling Orgy!" :guffaw:

LOL, seriously though, I see your point. I guess it really isn't something you can equate with sex - at least, not completely. It just seemed to me that when he linked w/FF, there was a 'seduction' aspect to it, especially during that ep in season 6 where she really seemed to influence/manipulate him to the point where he didn't give a crap about anything but the link. Neither of them seemed to enjoy their foray into solid sex (and neither did the audience!), but they very much seemed to enjoy linking with each other.

And IIRC, when they first showed Odo linking w/ FF in the season 3 opener, people interpeted that as analogous with the sex act. It does make me wonder though - how do changelings procreate? How are new changelings "born?" Odo was supposedly an 'infant' when he was sent out into the galaxy... I've always wondered about that.

I agree there IS a seduction aspect. But I don't see that about sex, rather about emotional manipulation. Odo is very emotionally needy and the female changeling exploited that.
