Why “Deep Space Nine”?

Bajorans in season 1 just called it "the space station". It was probably the only one in Bajoran space, or at least the only one large enough to be seen from Bajor when it was in Bajor's orbit before it was moved.

Some Bajorans were calling the station "Terok Nor" which implicated muscle memory of the tyranny they faced when the Cardassians occupied it. Star Trek was very good at establishing a sense of historical background for their living structures; it gave it weight and showed the station had many meanings for different people. Whoever returned to the station had some personal feelings towards it. Deep Space Nine as its designation along with Star Fleet's involvement could represent a meaning of hope for 1 fraction of people, and resistance to others, and a welcoming frame for many.
