Most people don't know that her real name is Whoopi Nichols-King.
From What I Recall....
Essentially when Whoopi was growing up she turned on TV and noticed Star Trek was on, she saw Uhura and ran to her mother shouting "Ma!! theres a Black Woman on TV and she ain't no maid!!!"
Essentially this inspired her Whoopi to become an actress, realising that Black Women could be in main roles

I thought where I saw it was that Trekkies documentary. (Nichelle Nichols told it, not Whoopie.)
Interesting that Whoopie doesn't ever seem to tell it...Nichelle just tells it ABOUT Whoopie.
One of the sources is supposed to be an interview by Whoopi on a TNG DVD set. Someone here must have watched that?I thought where I saw it was that Trekkies documentary. (Nichelle Nichols told it, not Whoopie.)

On Nichols' Wiki page there are 2 refs to print sources. Maybe there it's Goldberg's story.
