Hmm. I'm noticing in all these "who is your favorite?" threads that a lot of people seem be interpreting "favorite" as "best," and arguing on the basis of who is best at their jobs, or who saved the day the most, or is most qualified, or the most morally upright, or whatever.

The way I see it, "best" and "favorite" are not necessarily the same things. I mean, Doctors Phlox and Crusher certainly have much better bedside manners than the EMH, and are perfectly well-qualified for their jobs, but, as a viewer, I find McCoy and the EMH to be lot more interesting and entertaining and colorful as characters.

My favorites are the ones who are the most fun to watch (and write), regardless of whether they're the "best" at their jobs or not.

Yeah, but only Phlox is responsible for letting millions of people die while withholding the cure to their illness... That's got to weigh heavy on the cons side of the equation no matter what criteria you are basing your evaluation on.

Perhaps, but I try not to judge fictional characters on the basis of one possibly ill-conceived episode. That's the writer's fault, not the character's. :)

I am sorry but other than the stories where they appear into as written I don't see what you can possibly base your judgement of a character on.

As opposed to how the character works overall, aside from the occasional stray episode that didn't serve them well.

It's like, if Green Lantern does something egregious in one issue by one writer out of hundreds of stories published over the course of decades, does that mean the character is sullied forever . . .or do you just go "Boy, that issue really went off the rails. What was the writer thinking?"

Doesn't mean you stop reading GREEN LANTERN or hold the character's actions in that one issue over the character's head forever. Ditto for Doctor Phlox.

To quote Gwen in GALAXY QUEST: "That episode was very badly written!" :)

There's not much about Phlox that I like, in general. This episode happens to be more egregious than the usual, is all. The usage of leeches for example has been discredited a long time ago and for good reason. The idea that some alien leeches would have magic powers that are nowhere to be found in our own ecosystem is ridiculous. That is at least what I think. Science, yes, magic alien snake oil, NO.

My favorite is McCoy, he's what I grew up with. I liked Pulaski, too, she had some bite which I found lacking in Beverly.

Good news no one have voted for Pulaski :)

She was a bitch, wasn't she?

Mostly, she was a Bones-knock-off, and that's why I didn't like her. Well, that and she took Beverly's place. I HATED that!

But yeah, you could say she was a bitch. Or at least a bitcher.

First thing when she came on board she didn't report to Picard for no reason. Then she mispronounced Data's name. She nearly endangered the whole ship by neglecting the threat of the rapidly aging disease... to name a few.

^I am sorry but the EMH is the only one in the group with an actual, and very good at that, sense of humor.

That's all he is. When going into sickbay with a life-threatening condition, I want to be met by a genius in scrubs, not a photonic ham.
