1)Kira Nerys. I loved Nana Visitor's acting and the character's personality and back story simply fits my tastes the most out of them all. Also Trek's first really three-denominational, competent and well rounded female character who was more than just her job or her...ahm...assets.

    2) Spock. From the original series he and Uhura are the characters I like. Also he was the most developed character in that show. Noble, self-scarifying and I would call him compassionate. It's really only just that I don't like the Vulcan "no emotions" schtick and that I didn't enjoy the characters he was surrounded with that he lands second to Kira.

Now it's getting difficult, because neither Riker, nor T'Pol nor Chekotay are very stellar characters imho. I guess it goes:

    4) Data in "Chain of Command" on account of being Data, yet I do not think that Data would have worked as the regular First Officer for TNG. It would have devolved into the "Picard and Data Show" long before the movies.

    3) Riker, on account of actually having a discernible personality and being a character in my second-favorite ST series. He definitely started out abysmal, but improved with the seasons, still I think that post Best of Both Worlds he seemed somehow pointless, I also can't help that thinking that Thomas Riker might have been the more interesting character.

    4) T'Pol, on account of not being Chekotay. T'Pol did have some good moments, like whens she told Archer (or was it Trip?) that she envies their ability to dream and if Enterprise had been a better show and used her better she'd be definitely higher on this list.

    5) Elizabeth Shelby, we just didn't see enough of her to rank her higher.

    5) Chekotay on account of having no discernible personality traits and being a wild mash-up of every (positive) Native American cliche ever.

Spock or Kira -- there is no runnerup. Riker was good, T'Pol was OK, Chakotay was...Chakotay.

    T'Pol.
Then Spock. Based on the movies as I've never seen any of the original show.

    I don't like Enterprise, but I liked T'Pol.

I love voyager and Chakotay sucks.
    Kira just annoyed me.
    Riker also annoyed me.

Those three all tie for fifth.

Crazy like a fox! VOY always seemed like an extension of The Next Generation, in many ways, so I have an appreciation for the series. In which, Chakotay was a very reliable First Officer, in every respect. He was good in a fight, as well and fiercely loyal. But what I most appreciated about the character was his spirituality. Gene Roddenberry's edict was that the STAR TREK universe disregards religion as myth and superstition. Instead, Humanity puts their faith in technology. By imposing this ill-considered and unfortunate decision onto the STAR TREK format, the revered Gene Roddenberry had stumbled ... :borg:

It's hard to miss Chakotay's "spirituality", he brings it every other episode.

"Favorite" and "best" are not the same thing, especially when it comes to entertainment. I mean, I love the Creature from the Black Lagoon, but I wouldn't want to go swimming with him! :)

Meanwhile, let's not forget "Number One" from the original STAR TREK pilot--who would possibly beat Chakotay if she was included in the poll. :)

Pretty crafty of Leonard Nimoy to take drastic action to swing the vote in his favor.

What's interesting is that, in all of the polls, TOS is winning about 60% of the vote.

Well, TOS does have a twenty-year head start on the others. :)

It's not just longevity, it is quality. TOS produced the best characters overall.

That's highly subjective. You can say that they did so in your opinion, but definitely not in mine.
I'd say I found the DS9 characters overall better. To me Kira and Quark were perhaps the most interesting characters Trek has produced, others beg to differ. It's all opinions, not facts.

TOS has the advantage that it was the only Trek there was until 1987 and shown/ in syndication when there was still far less competition.

Of course opinion drives that perception. These polls are proving me right though on popular opinion. I didn't even vote for TOS characters myself (in most of them).
