    5. Kira Nerys - too high strung
    4. Chakotay - too easy going
    3. Will Riker - eh, he was okay
    2. Spock - A close second
    1. T'Pol - She had her work cut out for her

Easy choice here, probably for most.

    2. Kira Nerys

One of the realest, most complex characters in Star Trek.

    3. Will Riker

I'm internally debating between him and T'Pol more than I expected. But smarminess aside I think he filled his role better than T'Pol who was often used archetypally.

    4. T'Pol

    By a wide margin over...

    5. Chakotay

Spock, Spock and Spock. None of the other characters are comparable.

    Duh

    2. Kira Nerys

Probably Trek's best female character, and one of the reasons why DS9 is as good a show as it is.

    3. T'Pol

One of the more convincing Vulcans post-Spock.

    4. Riker

Okay, I guess. Better earlier on when he actually did things.

    5. Chakotay

    Blah.

Not at all surprisingly, this turns out to be the exact order I'd place the shows in as well.

But, who would you rather have as your first officer? I'm going with T'Pol. lol

Seriously...I'm a big TNG fan and think that Riker tends to get a bad rap in these parts, but Spock is...Spock. Riker's mother would vote for Spock.

If that was your intent, you should have phrased the question that way. I'd likely have voted for Riker then. Favorite fictional character vs. character you'd want to be in a specific hypothetical situation with.

This poll should've been "Who's Your Favorite First Office BESIDES Spock?"

    I voted Spock.

    Second favorite would be Riker.

However, T'Pol is the most attractive. :)

    In order:

    Spock, no contest.

I feel like I could get along best with Kira so she's a confident second, but I also thought DS9 handled her internal struggle a bit too generically. Still, I appreciate that she's got the AQ version of street cred and realism, but is sharp and witty enough to hang with people outside her field of expertise as well.

Will Riker seems like a good guy to get drinks with, and he's a dependable first officer, but after BOBW he seemed a little too comfortable with where he was at.

T'Pol gets things done, but not much else. I'd need a first officer who can also act as liaison to the crew.

Chakotay is Riker but even more aimless and unengaging.

Chakotay was a first officer? All this time I thought he was just a decorative piece of wood :)

    1. Spock: by far the best 1st officer and among the best overall character in the Trek universe.
    2. Riker: Often accused of the captain to be who threw it all away, because he got too comfortable as the Enterprise first officer. Actually, he is a better first officer than a captain, IMHO. That is what he was written to be, after all.
    3. T'Pol: Barely edges out Kira. I actually liked her as a character the moist on Enterprise.
4: Kira: the thing that hurts her for me is the first couple season, I thought she was intolerable. But she does redeem herself, with personal growth.
5: Chakotay: by far, the most wasted potential. Could have been a far cooler character than he ended up being. I blame part of it on writing, part of it on Beltran's seeming lack of interest in later seasons.

Somebody give Riker a pity vote...there's no justice that T'Pol has one and he doesn't.

I find this poll highly illogical, logically there is only one correct answer. Spock.

I voted Riker- but not out of pity!

Spock is arguably the most important and recognizable Trek character. In Sci-Fi, for that matter-

He's also vital to the TOS.

But "favorite"? Riker wins. He went from Kirk-ish (nothing wrong with that!) to more mature under Picard's influence, and from Jonathan Frakes he had a charming, warm presence with quirky limited acting ability at the same time- I liked the guy, TNG would have been a lot different without his vibe, and he's my favorite.

And yet, not everyone voted for him (although he is dominating).

Exactly. I chose the word "favorite" over "most qualified" or "best," so that people can apply their own standard to what makes them like that first officer the most.

William T. Riker is my favourite Star Trek first officer, followed by:

    Chakotay - close second!
T'Pol - despite her many surgical enhancements, she was cute in her own way.
    Spock - the original!
Kira - unnecessarily butch. Needed to girl-up more, with pink sweaters, or something like that. But her heart was in the right place. I liked that about her.

    Kira for me.

She is willing to go toe-to-toe with Sisko, someone she admires as a religious icon, when she thinks he's right, but when the chips are down she supports him 100%.

    As for the others:
Spock - An iconic character and gifted scientist, but never really came across as a forthright XO to me.
Riker - Really came off more as Picard's sidekick at times, they should've tried to make more of him.
    Chakotay - Yawn.
T'Pol - Definitely the most experienced onboard, but again came across more of a scientist first than second-in-command.
