Since the director of the 2nd best non Trek Star Trek movie (Master and Commander) been brought up, What about the guy who directed the best one? (Galaxy Quest)

I really don't mind. It'll be a couple of hours of entertainment quickly moved on from, just like the first two.

Anyone thinking that a change of director is going to transform Trek III into anything with more depth or relevance is sadly mistaken.

It'll be a noisy, fast paced action movie...

Edit : O.K., Rob Zombie !

What about James Gunn? Could he squeeze Trek3 in before GOTG2? (due April 2017)

Probably not

Transformers had no such brand that was strong enough to justify or explain the kind of money those movies have made worldwide. Bay has done it all for them.

Give Trek to Bay; why not?

Because I'd like a good movie.

Get a time machine and go to 1982. You'll find four or five really decent flicks, and one is a Star Trek movie. It's good - not great, but it will be well-remembered.

After '82, you're out of luck on the Trek movie front. ;)

:rommie: I've enjoyed every Trek movie on one level or another. And there are certainly some Bay films that are easily better than some of Trek's.

I'm more thinking about 2014 Michael Bay directing a new Star Trek movie. That terrifies me.

wish spielberg would drop out of BFG (set for summer 2016) and take over – itd be his first outer space set SF movie after a couple of almosts (Interstellar, Jedi, a SW prequel, and i read somewhere he may have been approached to direct Star Trek The Motion Picture at some point but turned it down for whatever reason - CE3K maybe?)and he was kind of involved in ST09

and I get the impression Singer would've been a shoo in had he not been doing XMA

While most of his movies make a ton of money I'd prefer someone who isn't as obsessed with action pieces. Most of Bay's movies are action porn where the scenes kind of exist to link action shots together.

People have been saying the same thing about the Abrams films for five years now. Might as well give them what they are complaining about.

And as a guy who watches a ton of movies that sentiment certainly irks me to no end.

How people can't see that STID has a script, with acting, and emotion regardless of what you think of the story is beyond me.

Though I voted "wild card," Kenneth Branagh would be an excellent choice. He would definitely study and respect the mythology of Star Trek as well as focus on character and relationships. Sadly, that is also why TPTB wouldn't even approach him.

Paramount has a rigid, unshakable, and monotonous vision of what Trek is or can be [which, as the owners of the property, is their right - I just don't have to like it nor do I].

Now, don't think for a moment a screenwriter or director can come in and expect any real measure of creative freedom or control. Even Abrams ran up against and got frustrated by all the strictures. This is also why the movies keep trying to fall back on and repeat The Wrath of Kahn.

It is now at least 97.819% certain the next Trek flick (even with William Shatner) will not be good and lead to another reboot.

This next STAR TREK needs a director who can deliver a movie with plenty of High Octaine, High Voltage action. I would prefer Michael Bay to take on the project. But, wow ... Kenneth Branagh made The List! How about that?

You know, he must've sold his soul to The Devil to get to direct "Thor." And what he delivered was a mixed bag, at best. I am a huge fan of Ken's, mostly because of his Shakespeare films. His Henry V is, by any definition of the word, a Masterpiece. The battle scenes are particularly effective. I am also a fan of his version of Much Ado About Nothing. Though nowhere near "inspired," the cinematography is gorgeous and the soundtrack is one of my favourites. As a film, itself, it's entertaining. But, Ken's not the director he once was. He's not a young man and he's lost his edge. Still, he should've been offered STAR TREK: Nemesis, because he would've delivered a far superior picture. At least people would've came out to see it, unlike what actually happened. That's for certain ...
