Who should become the next Doctor after Whittaker?

Some suggestions;
Anna Maxwell Martin
Lydia Wilson
Sophie Okonedo
Keeley Hawes
Jason Flemyng
Julian Rhind-Tutt
Douglas Hodge

The Next Doctor should be a person playing the character with Blue Skin..

If they are going to say the Doctor is a shape changer, and explain that Time Lords can be anything they want to be, then fine. The Next Doctor NEEDS to have Blue skin. It wouldn't be odd at all. It is right. It is canon. the Doctor can come back with Blue Skin.

This thread should not even exist. Thirteen has only just taken her first breaths and Whittaker has yet to put her mark on the role. Why are Who fans always obsessed with 'who's next?' when the current has yet to take up the role properly?

She will only have the job for 3, maybe 4 years at most. Why not speculate on the future for fun? 4 years is a short enough time to assume that whoever the new Doctor is we will be familiar with him or her, whoever is chosen.

I would be all for blue skin...but the next Doctor doesn't need to have blue skin.
Romana wore blue well... Apparently it's an excepted colour, tho we've not seen any other time Lord's wear blue bodies. Romana's regen in the Destiny of the Daleks shows a timelord can regen into any humanoid species. Tall and Greek, short and blue, or a former princess body. Either way, the doctor can become any scale or color or gender.

It shows a lack of respect and a lack of confidence in the actor. I have been a fan since Tom Baker and I have never once speculated on the next Doctor.

Lack of respect? Even she is the greatest of them all she will still be gone in 3 or 4 years. That is if they keep the current tradition going. Maybe 3 or 4 years simply doesn't seem like that big of a passage of time to me. Or that I am American and we basically start speculating on who the next American President or potential challenger is like what seems like 5 minutes after the current guy is sworn in. Hell we have a whole forum here talking about speculating the future of Trek and sometimes it comes true. People have been talking about a possible Academy show since at least the late 80's when that was seen as a possible TOS movie or new show. People are always going to wonder, what comes next!

Again, I'm not saying The Doctor can't have blue skin. All I'm saying is that the next incarnation of The Doctor doesn't need to have blue skin as you emphatically stated in all caps.

Ah..I probably needed to change the wording then to "Should" rather then "NEEDS" to be...LoL. Had a nip at the old sauce when I was writing that.

They should go with a Black British Man as the next Doctor.

All the commentary about the Doctor being a female and how awkward that makes things during time travel will get old by the end of Jodie's run.

The Doctor being a Black man, and travelling to times where racial struggles existed could pose an interesting challenge for him.

Put it this way...how would you feel if you got a new job and people started taking bets on how long you stay & who will take your role before you even start?
Renewal and regeneration are core to the programme, but 'fans' need to give any new Doctor some slack. We didn't have any of this crap in the 80s...and I went to plenty of conventions when Doctor Who was shunned by even the most ardent geek.

I would be upset if I felt like my job was on the line because of the speculation but if you know your gone in 4 years no matter what I doubt I would think much about it. I would be more upset about people not wanting me in the job because I was female or maybe I would find it inspiring to want to prove them wrong. I mean each person's own motivations are different so that one is kind of hard to predict. As for the 80's you didn't have the internet or such a huge fan base around the world. At some point I imagine people just accept things as being the way things are in the internet age. Fans love to explore every facet of their shows from behind the scenes stuff to what is on the screen as well. You now have the whole world to share those interests with people who also have those interests and not just your small group of like minded friends in your hometown.

The 3 to 4 year 'rule' is not guaranteed. Jodie may leave sooner, she may even break Tom Baker's 7 year run. Troughton started the 3 year rule and it's become an unofficial leaving point for most Doctors. Colin was sacked...twice. He wanted to break Tom's record.
Stating she is going to leave after a designated period is a bit blinkered.
As for classifying as one person, amongst a small group of like minded friends in my home town...you couldn't be further from the mark.

With the exception of Eccleston, all the modern Doctors have had three year contracts, so we can probably expect her to stay a minimum of that. I wouldn't really expect her to stay longer, though. After all, Tennant and Capaldi were both super-fans who considered being the Doctor their ultimate career goal and even they didn't stay longer than three years. Or much longer, rather, as Tennant did stay for the 2009 specials.

Have they actually had three-year contracts or is that something fans have assumed based on the results? I don't think I've ever seen that explicitly stated, but I'm ready to be proven wrong.

Has anyone connected to show even talked about how long they expect her to stay? While it's true we only assume she will leave after 3 or 4 years I wonder if anyone other than fans have talked about this to the press or something. I also have question that older fans might answer. Has any Doctor been replaced for no other reason than the actor might not have been doing a good job or because of fan pressure? Has it always been because a actor was ready to move or the show simply like to change gears to constantly stay, fresh. Why did Baker stay so long to begin with? I know he was very popular, maybe the most popular but didn't the actor ever have desires to have a movie career or anything like that away from the, Doctor, character.

William Hartnell left for health reasons while Colin Baker was forced out because of Michael Grade. Both of them wanted to keep going but couldn't. Otherwise, everyone left on their own volition, with Peter Davison taking Patrick Troughton's advice to leave after three seasons. Tom Baker left because he was growing tired of the role and because he seriously butted heads with Jonathan Nathan-Turner about the direction of the show.
