Who likes Spock/Uhura too?

How do you feel about the Spock/Uhura pairing?

Spock is one of Star Treks if not Star Trek's most popular characters.

I think JJ would be crazy to think he would need to normalise Spock's character to make him more acceptable to modern audiences.

However there might be a bit of truth that in giving Spock a girlfriend then he and Kirk (and McCoy) can have a bromance without being considered gay.

The term bromance has never been used to define gay relationships. Bromance has always been about guys who are best friends, share a great platonic love and affection, and who go through live together. One of the most distinctive things about Bromace is the guys talking about girls or their sexual encounters with women.

A perfect example of bromance are the guys from The Hangover or Joey/Ross/Chandler from FRIENDS.

I gotta say that I really don't care for it much. Uhura is a great character but the whole thing with Spock seems to drag his character down. He's supposed to be the unreachable, logical Vulcan. Not some romantic half-Human. But I don't mind too much. It's just not a pairing that I particularly like.

All bromances are pulsating with subtext. PULSATING.

Not really, no.

If one looks at fanfic all friendships are pulsating with subtext ;)
It's why I avoid "fanfic" like the plague. Years ago I read a few examples, thinking it might be interesting to see a "fan's" take on Trek--apart from a few, isolated ideas (often buried in "subtext"), nada. Gave up on that rather quickly.

I value friendship highly and would actually like to see more emphasis on friendship and less on sex - never did fit that well with the mass market...

You'd have to be looking only at a particular "type" of fanfic to find that being the case. It's like any other form of writing; there's the good, the bad, and the in-between.

I value good writing highly, dealing with love stories I like in particular and a sense of "team." That could be why I don't fit so well with the TOS crowd and why it's looking like this particular Trek isn't for me.

It's okay, though. The "fanfic" writer that I read is actually a published author that just happens to write S/U as a hobby. So, lucky me...

Well, it looked like that for K/S in STID to me, so maybe...

This is so thrilling to me that we agree on this.

There are some lovely, VERY lovely vids on youtube for STID K/S but I don't think I'm allowed to post them as they obviously come from illegally obtained footage since the dvd isn't out.

I can't wait for the frenzy that is coming..

Spock /Uhura it's not a tragic enough story to be a 'true' romantic story. Two very attractive clever professional powerful people getting together isn't romantic enough for me.

I need some unrequited or forbidden love. ;)
