Who likes Spock/Uhura too?

I love Uhura and Spock together!! I've been a bit despondent since I watched STID.

This is a S/U thread so hopefully I won't have calls for me to get a life..LOL but it's true I've been a bit down. I have myself to blame really...I went to Star Trek 2009 completely unspoiled. I was off for my birthday and after shopping didn't really want to go home so I wandered to the theatres and got a ticket to see ST. I was blown away by the opening, but I didn't sit up straight in my seat until Uhura went in the lift with Spock and I thought hey now...what's going on here...:-)

I ABSOLUTELY fell in LOVE with Uhura and Spock and every instance they were within breathing space of one another I perked up that much more. By the time I saw that movie there were about 14 people in the theatre with me and I kicked myself so much for not going to see it sooner. I have been a Star Trek fan since the original series with The Enterprise as my all-time favorite series. Spock and Uhura was so new and fresh ...now here was really and truly a bold new world to explore on screens.

The movie overall was fantastic aside from S/U but it was those two gorgeous actors and characters that had me returning to see the movie 4 more times before I was too embarrassed to go back and ask for a ticket for one please? :-)

Now, STID finally opens and I was at the theatre the second day. Thinking the theatre would be crowded I went to the early morning showing 9:30am...Before I would give up my money I asked the ticket seller how many people were in the theatre and he said 20 there were still 320 seats remaining (first of all I didn't know the theatre held those many seats and secondly I laughed because I wondered how many other shy people had asked him this same question before me---so afraid we would have to sit immediately next to a stranger without a seat between us. :-)

Any hoo, as I said I went to ST2009 unspoiled but for this one as soon as the overseas tumblrs began posting about the movie I was eating it up. I didn't worry about not reading too many posts about Spock/Uhura because I had all the beautiful pictures/videos of Zach and Zoe in the interviews/press conferences and photo calls to salivate over.

Well, I think anyone reading this post will know that I came out of this movie sad.

I thought to myself, what happened to my babies??? Am I now to believe all their intimacy and intimate moments happens behind closed doors??? I didn't go looking for porn or for either Spock or Uhura to be unprofessional as I love and respect them because they are so very professional.

I just seriously feel as if TPTB set the relationship back on screen (I do feel they are still a strong and loving couple but off camera---which as a nosey S/U shipper- I don't like.) I have only seen STID once and when I thought to go again on Saturday I went to visit my sister instead.

In 2009 they were touching/lip to lip kissing..this movie Uhura kisses Spock's "cheek" after she has sealed his helmet-what the heck???!!!! Spock runs to her on the bridge when they are in total danger and yet they don't hold hands...they had dealt with the miss-understanding at this point so I thought he would reach for her hands but they both just stood there. And regarding the hurt feelings, I totally get that and took Uhura (and Kirk's) side...LOL...and I loved all three of them in the shuttle with Spock explaining himself...but I selfishly wanted more . When U stands on her tippy toes...HOW CUTE IS THAT??? but Spock still pauses before he finally leans in to kiss. I wanted the same emotions he showed when they were the lift back in ST2009 as they were finally alone this time as well. I wanted him to hug her to hold her hands or to rest his forehead with hers....but Uhura walked away so quickly as if to say we will do all that later in the cabin............away from the audience so no one doesn't think I'm being unprofessional...well guess what babes I can't believe it but to read some of the reviews you would have thought they ripped each other's clothes off and had sex right then and there...many are feeling U (for some reason only Uhura is being singled out) was being unprofessional. For me, Uhura speaking up when they were in the shuttle was the PERFECT time for her to say something. They were heading to the Klingons...speak now or forever hold your peace I thought and I think Uhura felt the same way. Kirk was so glad she spoke up because he took his moment to agree he was feeling the same as well after he tried to pitifully stay out of it.

When I went to STID I had my mind set on two things--- hearing Benedict Cumberbatch's lucious voice (as I am a huge Sherlock fan) and seeing that beautiful chemistry between Zach and Zoe as my beloved Spock and Uhura. I'm not ashamed to say I was expecting some hugs, some kisses, some forehead touches, and some soulful eye contact....but instead to my horror TPTB didn't get my memo!

Now, after all that complaining and moaning please believe me when I say EVERY MOMENT they shared I loved! My favorite line was when Spock was backing Jim off from trying to help Uhura as she went to parley with the Klingons. I was like he knows his baby so well :-) If he had given in, he knew Uhura would have really ripped his bangs off herself and not just spoken about it like Kirk.

I was so happy for Zoe to get her wish to have a more active and involved Uhura as far as the action goes but instead of Kirk getting up hungover with two aliens with tails I would have loved a scene of domestic Spock and Uhura having a conversation as he was getting dressed for his meeting with Kirk and Pike, about Spock's actions in the volcano -the genesis of their miss-understanding and having a little argument where you could see Uhura decide she has to give him the cold shoulder. I just wanted MOAR!!!!

FanFic is great and has helped but nothing can beat actually seeing them on the big screen. I love them as a couple and respect if they want to handle all their kissy kissy hug hug behind closed doors but their the reason....I'm not ashamed....the MAJOR reason I went to STID and I feel the nay-sayers voices were louder than us lovers of S/U voices and I ended up with a hella cute scene of Uhura helping Spock to get kitted in his volcano suit but ended up with her not thinking to kiss--until after she had his helmet sealed. Argh!!!! :-)

That was bullshit that came out of nowhere, and didn't really work.

My like for S/U came from the fact that Zack Quinto and Zoe Saldana where the actors and they are two of my favourites actors at the moment. Also the romance was done very well considering the fact that it was just a minor plot.

I have always said that S/U is very similar to the Aragorn and Arwen type of romance in the lord of the rings films where the couple get like 5-10 minutes on screen in a 3 hours film but we still get the whole story.

The S/U romance was not a cheesy , badly acted , unconvincing way over the top romance like anakin/padme from Star Wars or edward/bella from Twilight. it was about 2 believable people in a relationship, Which for star trek is how a romance should be.

However I only like S/U together in JJVerse alternate reality which is the 09 film and hopfully in the 2013 film.

I loved Anakin and Padme, if only for the fact that it was 'forbidden fruit' and quite tragic. Also, I think that a high government official like Padme and a law enforcement officer like Anakin would speak in the way shown, as people uncertain of themselves but still in love. About Edward and Bella, I have no knowledge.

A lot of folks keep thinking this relationship is out of left field, but twice in TOS Uhura was flirting with Spock, and she asked him for lessons on the vulcan harp!

I think it works. It's exploring a new dimension of Spock that Nimoy's take didn't venture in to. It also expands Uhura's role when she was mostly the ship secretary and occasional background character of the original lineup. I accept the pairing and I'm interested to see where it goes.

Oh... Carol mentioning Christine in passing and Kirk not getting it, I wonder if that was a 'take that' to those fans who were harping so hard that Spock shouldn't be with anyone else.

I enjoyed Spock's explanation when they were in the trade ship to both Uhura and Kirk about how much he does care. When they boarded the Enterprise again and she kissed him as a way of saying, this spat is over, it was very sweet because you could see it meant something to him.

Uhura seems like a private person. If this was Gaila she's be all about boasting about her Vulcan hottie but Uhura and Spock kept it a secret for a while and keep their relationship out of the public eye. Kirk got a look in because he is close to them both.

Maybe next movie you'll see them waking up in bed together one morning and the movie will have at last achieved an equal status with Star Trek's other most intimate relationship scene which took only 7 seasons to get to just that.

Oh I don't care. I'm not a romance person, I enjoy what's on offer but I've never been a shipper. I can trot out my preferences for any characters but I'm not invested. And Trek has always stumbled at romance.

I adore that moment! There is more familiarity, love and romance in that little interaction between them (her sweet indulgence when he's all nerdy is adorable) than in more explicitly romantic scenes IMO also the fact that Uhura is the one helping him wear that thing because he's probably more comfortable with her touching him
That little interaction alone says a lot and makes it pretty clear that they're not just colleagues.

and I think Uhura is a little tease
I love his confusion it makes me think about all these small display of affection by her and him secretly enjoying them even though they're illogical (like "why do you kiss me when I'm wearing the helmet"? and yet he still tilts his head a bit as to receive the kiss)

Spock runs to her on the bridge when they are in total danger and yet they don't hold hands...

they hold hands (it's probably more visible in imax than 16:9 unfortunately where you just see the movement and you get the feeling of it) it's said in the novelization too
there is another scene where they also hold hands:
when McCoy's hand is trapped in the torpedo and they are all anxious for him. When they finally see he's out of danger Uhura moves to Spock. It's subtle and in the background but you see the movement where he raises his hand and take hers.

Their relationship had always been very subtle
I understand your disappointment and I understand why someone might get suspicious and think that perhaps the writers toned it down to placate the haters.
But realistically I think you get more in your face scenes between them in the first movie because the first one was more about Spock IMO while this movie is more about Kirk.
Maybe it's just my impression but it seems to me that most of the interactions that got focus on are the ones that happen in his presence or when the characters interact with him.

I know that he's Damon Lindelof's favorite and I get why this had to be a Kirk's movie but I also hope that the last one will be more an ensemble. I also like it more when Spock is allowed to be a protagonist on his own and he isn't used only as Kirk's friend (or Kirk's friend to be) that is one of the reason why I'm glad he has Uhura.


Still I think Spock's speech on the way to the klingon planet is one of the most touching scenes of both movies.
It could as well be him telling her "I love you" without using those words and without making him OOC. Also I like that they didn't pretend that what happened to vulcan never happened and didn't affect him.
Though you will probably understand the S/U and Spock's arc better if you read the comics.

Malaika, I hear you and thank you so much for stating that they do hold hands not once but twice as I did not see either. I saw the movie in 2D..we don't have an IMAX near me. I am actually going back today to see it with a friend in 3D so maybe I will see more this time around.
Also, thanks to your response I will endeavor to see the kiss/sealed helmet scene differently and I will endeavor to see Spock's confusion as not you're my student and I'm your professor this is highly inappropriate, but as rather him wondering why the heck he missed out on another kiss as she waited to seal his stupid helmet first. I need to look for his head tilt.
Ummm, where are these Comics???? I need them NOW! I did see that the STID book by Alan Dean Foster is coming out (or has come out) so I will get that and as with FanFic there is always more with the written word and I really shouldn't have expected as much on screen---my disappointment is lifting...

No luck on 3D either...we caught it in 2D again...but I have to say I did enjoy the movie more on 2nd viewing. I sat on left side of theatre -wonder if this makes a difference as this is my usual side and the theatre was much fuller---about 50/55 people this time. Hopefully, I will be able to catch it in IMAX but regardless I liked it more and am so happy about that.

Well, I wouldn't give up on them just yet. I saw some problems with how they were played as well, but I had more issues with Zach's performance (throughout the whole film) that Zoe's. She did have a couple of not so great moments, and I'm thinking of one in particular. I'm curious to see if some of what you saw is what I saw too.

I don't know. It just seemed like both of them weren't really into it this time. I know it's acting, but they didn't really seem to give it their best effort. That's too bad.

Thank you so much Spock/Uhura Fan I was here on the forum after the 2009 movie loving Spock and Uhura, but this time around I couldn't find a thread. Finally I googled and it found you guys for me

I'm feeling better about S/U in the movie but still wasn't able to see the hand-holding due to having to see it again in 2D, and still have some upset with TPTB who I still feel miss-directed Zach.

In the 2009 movie, we didn't see their coming together as a couple--seeing them flirt - take cautious steps towards one another - Spock being confused by his feelings for his student/denying his feeling/ultimately giving in to his feelings - Uhura deciding she not only respected Spock but being flattered by his compliments and deciding to take charge and take matters into her own hands (well this is my head canon she lead and he willingly after some hesitation followed.)

Believe me, I know we didn't get that because that wasn't a Spock/Uhura hold hands and travel the cosmos movie.

It's only because I feel those things had to have happened in order to get them to the level of intimacy they displayed in their scenes in the 2009 movie. In STID, I felt Spock would know exactly why Uhura was upset by his actions - and I can get behind him being stubborn thinking he was in the right and Uhura being so frustrated she stops speaking and gave him the cold shoulder , but the way Zach's facial expressions were for Spock was confusion and the stiffness of his body (in the non life-threatening scenes) was disconcerting for me upon my initial viewing.

I feel it would have been so cute to have him trying to explain himself but not admitting that he was wrong (hopefully there is a deleted scene somewhere) -just trying to get her not to be mad at him---but I feel many of the audience who aren't shippers (and maybe some shippers too--I don't know) would have had a fit with this and people would have blamed Uhura for corrupting the Spock character or something (they seem to like to blame Uhura for unprofessionalism why not this too.)

I really felt this Spock who has been in a relationship (and I agree with Zoe - a sexual relationship) would know Uhura's emotions inside and out and he would be working his butt off to fix this situation rather than letting her walk around hurt and upset waiting for her to work it out or get over it.

As an aside the interview I watched with Zach and Zoe on the Jonathan Ross show where when asked if Spock and Uhura have had sex yet (paraphrasing this as it's been awhile since I've seen it) Zach almost appeared to (or did - I can't remember) want to say No ---which just reinforced to me that he had bad direction because if he thinks the intimacy Spock and Uhura displayed in the 2009 movie was indicative of a couple still only holding hands was amazing to me.

For me, Spock and Uhura of 2009 already had sex and the intimacy they were able to display in times of distress showed that it was more than sex that this was a real and mature relationship---so with Spock's reactions in STID I just really felt it was off.

I think the powers that be thought it would work to have Uhura mad (as she is the human) and Spock not understand and be confused by her (as he is the Vulcan) and as Kirk noted Spock and TPTB were forgetting he's half human as well and TPTB forgot that he and Uhura had been together as a couple for I would guess 1/2yrs prior to 2009 movie and then another 1 year getting to STID movie....I feel they sort of brought this negativity that is out there (other threads/tumblrs/YT movie reviews etc...) onto the Uhura character, who I love so much, when Uhura is playing it 100% correct ...she would be upset/frustrated/cold until she could figure out how to make him understand (which is the place she got to in the shuttle) and she could still be professional (which she was through-out the entire movie IMO) but having Spock so confused and stiff made it appear to some as if Uhura was whiney and being unprofessional, and to me as if they took a step back in their relationship.

I clearly can't respond with a simple thank you LOL AND I would love to hear your opinions and I am so much better about it all now that I was told there are things I can't see in the 2D format.

@Spock/Uhura Fan - they are so gorgeous and even more so together. There is one gif on tumblr (I don't have a tumblr myself) where Uhura sort of places her hand on Spock's abdomen and I don't know if that is a deleted scene but I definitely didn't see that in the movie either.

I think there was just so much action going on, that I couldn't concentrate on S/U alone.
The 1st picture, I didn't see this until my second viewing and I wondered how I missed it. I also didn't understand initially the moment on the bridge when Spock looks at Uhura before he goes after Khan. On 1st viewing I think I thought he just looked to his side deciding what course of action to take himself ---but actually he looked directly at Uhura and was including her in the decision making.

Spock really did show Uhura respect through-out the entire movie...I was never sad about that--just really the body language and me missing instances where they showed warmth and closeness which is intimacy as well had me like scratching my head when I came out of the movie the first time around.

I'm going to make my way through the thread later as I want Meta meta meta on S/U - I love reading other people's opinions.

I think it's a different angle of the scene where McCoy and Carol are playing with that torpedo and it looks bad for Bones before Carol saves the day
On the bridge they're all relieved especially Kirk and Uhura places her hand on his shoulder and then she goes to Spock and they hold hands.

When Spock looks to Uhura, it's like he is asking for her permission to go but more than asking her permission it really is a hint that he now understands what she had been trying to tell him earlier because he knows she had took it wrong when earlier in the movie he almost died in the volcano, that she thought he didn't care about her and how she'd felt if something happened to him. The look reinforces what he told her in the shuttle about how the opposite is true and he does care.
and Uhura gets it now and she understands him so she gives him her permission.


I think that this is what Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana were referring to here:

And Uhura, she needs to learn to just understand his Vulcan side. She’s with a man who has duty before anything else, she needs to accept and embrace that when he tells her that she’s important to him, that she is.”

I'm so glad to see this discussion. I felt much like the earlier poster that STID was a better film but I left the theatre feeling a little cold because the Spock/Uhura relationship seemed to have distanced itself. But after the wonderful chat on this thread. I'll be seeing it tonight in 3D in a new light. I'll be checking for hand holding and whatnot.
