Spoilers Who is the mastermind in Season 3 of Picard?

Due to the number of eyes on this show (casual fans of Trek/scifi mostly) I don't think the pah wraiths will be the villain as it's perhaps not as shocking as the Borg coming back..and might be a deep cut too far for the casual viewer

Why do I think Beverley is going to die protecting Jack (who might not truly be her son anyway).

Perhaps Jack is Picard and the Borg Queens son...
The face looks like a stylized Locutus.

It's possible we won't get the Borg, not the cube or drones, but something resulting out of their machinations that needed a Changeling faction to do their leg work, and Jack is something resulting out of the Queen and Locutus...a Borg King of some kind, possibly latent.

This would also fit with Matalas saying no Borg this season. Cheeky

I don’t think that the face is locborg. The face sounds rather angry, full of violence and with a personal aversion against the federation. A melting face locborg should be more based.

The subspace lifeforms from the early episode of TNG Season 6, are still in my mind the masterminds - the target being Starfleet specifically.

The voice in Jack's head is not the mastermind, but something the mastermind is trying to use - here the theory with Locutus can co-exist - but the Borg are not the enemy. It has been mentioned that the early episodes have many hints and clues:
  1. Visual and audible cues from the aliens working under Vadic. (*)
  2. In Episode 2, Titus Rikka says "Enemies of the Federation" - this conglomerate of enemies is needed as tools because the alien entities do not have a presence or knowledge of normal space.
  3. In Episode 4 - When Vadic cuts her hand off - this is a callback to that episode and the experiment that happened to Riker where his hand was surgically cut and re-attached to a .02 micron difference. Related to the below.
  4. "The Face" communication is across 'subspace' - The Face itself is non-corporeal and fluidic. (Otherwise, why make it so difficult to communicate?) By embedding communications ability in Vadic, ensures her obedience.
  5. Episode 5 - Jack's vision of the transporter scene - as they transport - the crew it appears, scream - the transporter is a subspace device that works by transferring objects across subspace. Starfleet's transporters operate on certain frequencies.
  6. Possessed Jack then says: "Is there somewhere else I can go? Anywhere, please. Another planet. Anywhere else as long as it's not a Starfleet ship" hinting the problem is with Starfleet... This is because he has connected to the subspace aliens.
  7. Episode 6 - Vadic's rally speech to the changeling crew about: Silence, Peace and Unity - it is clear something has disrupted the status quo.
  8. Previous warning about certain sensor modifications to Starfleet ships in the TNG Season 6 episode was made (as they first appeared due to La Forge's engineering handiwork) and an emphasis that La Forge was now objecting against the inter-ship beacon modifications is noted in Episode 6 as well - "Tell him, Alandra!".
  9. In all the early episodes the Shrike 'changelings' do not die like normal ones, nor are they as fast or capable. The ones under Vadic are Solanogen-based evolved - so it is possible to 'harm' them as they are not real changelings. When Crusher conducts the autopsy on the organs of the changelings, they eventually lose shape because the Changeling enhanced Solanogen material cannot hold form in normal space.
  10. In Episode 7, "The Face" says: "Your physiology is not as special or complex as you believe. You are by nature malleable." and demonstrates an ability to control Vadic... showing superior medical knowledge, particularly of physiology... Who else has ever done such wide experiments and of all races - on changelings?
  11. It is suspected they need Jack's abilities to coordinate the final downfall of Starfleet.

(*) If the argument is 'well, they can't exist in normal space' - remember in the episode they were doing experiments. Including turning Lt Edward Hagler's blood into a liquid polymer... now suppose they worked out how from the Changeling's physiology and biology to now do be able to exist in normal space. They don't have to look exactly like the aliens in the episode - because that lab was a pocket of their world to keep the abducted crew alive - being experts at physiology they can fashion tools or appearances as they like or needed.

The Schisms aliens' motive was never identified or established in TNG, but if the modifications do impact subspace and are 'harming' Solanogen-based subspace lifeforms - would it not be in their interest to study what is harming them to save themselves - by destroying the direct threat against them? How better to do that, if one could gather, by whatever means possible, all Starfleet ships together and eliminate them in one fell swoop?

The above would neatly tie up a TNG loose-end... and can be resolved in two episodes in a manner consistent with core Trek values and expectations.

Matalas mentioned that people missed a 'giant' hint… I'm sure that is
Vadic's giant buddy with the red mask. He was not blown out - and you don't see him die in Episode 8. It is likely he will be the one through who they establish the connection to resolve the conflict. Note - it has not been explained how he was shot, died and came back to life - multiple times. He is the only other Vadic 'Changeling' that has speaking lines and a spoiler in Episode 7: closed captions gives him a different title than the credits…

It seems whenever this theory around Solanogen based lifeforms or similar is brought up on Reddit, it is quickly deleted…. Hmm.

I think it's that the blue hexagonal mat that Picard's body was laying on in the Shrike is the same that Locutus was laying on in sickbay in BoBW2.

speaking of Reddit, that is a superstonk level post! Adding the conspiracy theory hint and the end just seals it

I can see what terry and others have been saying to avoid all spoilers until you watch the episode.

It’s spreading right now. I’ve seen the pictures, all of them. This is a 9of10 spoiler situation right now.
9/10? What would make it a 10/10?

I have to say this is a very well thought out theory - not sure I accept it, but I can certainly see it as possible. Nicely done!

Omg the spoilers are amazing! Not sure they will be good, but that's not the point really - I must admit Picard isn't what I'd hoped for, but oh well :nyah:
