Fleet Captain
She's sort of this series big bad, but there's a bit of mystery about her. Thought I'd put up a poll similar to the River Song poll from a few months back, on which option #3 turned out to actually be the one. Wonder which one this'll be?

Just the leader of the Church of Silence-A chance that she'll just be an original character, since previous finales have pretty much dealt with familiar foes and Moffat wants her to be a new character. Old Amy-Based on Speculation by Guy Gardener and based on her hate of the Doctor, although they'd have to explain why she seemingly changed her appearence, since old amy and Kovarian are roughly the same age.

A version of Melody/River-Hinted at in the trailers with River wearing the eyepatch. Makes the whole library thing kind of hard to explain though.

Omega in a new female regeneration-People have been saying Omega for a long time.

Fenric in a female form (Yeah, I know I caught some criticism for this one!)-Well God Complex had that scene similar to Fenric, and I'm still convinced the Mark Gatiss character who looks like a Viking playing Chess might be Kovarian and Fenric. Could be wrong though.

The Rani in a new form-Probably not but who knows.

We're not going to find out this season-Well, it's possible knowing Moffat.

Others-Anything else I missed.

I think she is a future companion that was almost killed by the doctor and wants her revenge.

You kind of have to figure out why there's an entire intergalactic, largely human, religiously-oriented military bent on the Doctor's destruction first, I imagine. That's the bigger question, anyway.

I voted for Old Amy. He would be responsible for making his own enemy. On the other hand Madame Kovarian will probably turn out to be the daughter of River Song :p.

You left out "Who cares?"
Then why are you here? :D

You're not far wrong considering how this series has turned out. :p

Seriously, though, ever since I heard the theory about old Amy surviving and being behind this whole thing, the more sense it's made. We still haven't confirmed that it's young Melody who kills the Doctor in "The Impossible Astronaut"; it could somehow be old Amy in that spacesuit, stealing the regeneration energy.

Checkmate is right: Mme Kovarian as a character doesn't really require much explanation given the existence of the Church. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it turned out to be Older Amy or the daughter of River, though.

Older Amy I don't expect, but it would be interesting to see a companion turned enemy. I could also buy Donna turning out to be so. However, I really don't expect any companion to turn out to be the main Baddie, and even less so Omega, or the Rani or anyone from older Who. Still I'd love it to turn out to be a regenerated Donna caused some where by finding the master's ring. The new Donna played by a different actress can explain River's not recognizing her as well as being surprised to see her. Now, timelord consciousness gone nutty from being suppressed she goes after the Doctor.

Given Moffat's disdain for using classic characters I'm sure she's an original character. I don't see her being Old Amy since she's the same age as Old Amy and looks nothing like her. I don't see how she could be an incarnation of River since we've now accounted for all her regenerations (Young Melody, Black Mels, River Song).

We actually don't know that we've seen all of River's regenerations. Was the little girl in the alley really the same as the infant Melody? Did she regenerate into Mels or was there a regeneration in between? I think it's a long shot but there's room in the revealed timeline for Kovarian to be Melody.

Well, Mels said last time she regenerated she was the little girl in New York. So, I think, short of the characters lying to us, we've seen all of River's regenerations.

Wait...Moffat has a "disdain" for using Classic characters? Since when? We don't know that he does or doesn't have one since we haven't seen any yet. Has he given an interview stating this? Or is this just a fan lament?

Anyways I don't think Kovarian has any connection to Amy or River. She's just a new character that serves the purposes of the religious order that is bent on bringing down the Doctor. As others have stated we should be focusing on them.

He had a bunch of classic villains in last year's finale. Yes, most could have been any generic villain, but the Autons were actually very important to the plot. He wrote for a Sontaran and a Silurian a few episodes ago (and I think he certainly had fun with the Sontaran).

So, while I think he enjoys creating new villains, I don't think he's opposed to old ones. That being said, since he likes creating new ones, I suspect eye patch lady is new.

It's got to be The Rani. I mean, The Rani likes un-ethical experiments, right?

Kidding. But seriously, any clues they've dropped have gone over my head as far as her identity. I think her identity is just "The Bad Guy".

I know Moffat said that he's going to create his own villains and not just keep resurrecting classic ones, which is why I said that. He's clearly more interested in his Silence / River storyline than the shocking return of the Daleks / Cybermen / Master / Davros / Time Lords in the season finale ;)

^ Except as Alidar pointed out we got the Alliance in last seasons finale and we are getting another return of a classic foe next week. So I guess I'm disagreeing with your statement that he's ignoring Classic villains.

Kovarian being old Amy is a stupid idea that nobody with more than two braincells should vote for. Firstly, why change the actor to someone who looks nothing like Karen Gillian when we already saw her in makeup that was supposed to be her pushing 60 anyway? Also it was well established that old Amy did not escape. Time would rip apart if she did, otherwise the Doctor would have let her into the Tardis. And finally, old Amy accepted her fate to disappear. She did it for Rory. Those aren't the actions of an evil child-stealing woman like Kovarian.

And the Rani? Fenric? Omega? Seriously? These are ridiculous suggestions and they're based on a desire to see old villains again, not any kind of evidence in the new series.

Well, the military-church's logo is the omega symbol, so that could be seen as proof that she is or at least connected to Omega.

Just a thought.
