Exactly. Peter Preston is dead, and now he finds out McGivers is dead as well. Spock will later follow.
I remember a TJ HOOKER episode reunion about 1983 or so that rather qualified, minus the ear-points.

If they had just dispensed with the dress jackets once they went on regular duty. Why strain to emulate Hornblower instead of straining to emulate Star Trek?
If they had Khan use some hypnotic drug to gain control of Terrel and Chekov. And if a bug, why such a big bug? I mean, making the eel the size of an earwig would have had the virtue of feeling familiar to people. That thing just looked silly.
If a line or two had been given about how - yet again - a Starfleet ship of the line got commandeered by capable but hopelessly under resourced and out of touch people. Something as simple as the hypno drug got put in the water supply.
If Carol Marcus had been Ruth Marcus or Janet Wallace. Admittedly a pet peeve but damn, Kirk was already described as having been very close with those two. It begins to make him look silly - to the Trek fan - to add yet another.
If a few words had been spent to make Genesis a little less magical by tying it in with transporter technology or some alien technology discovered on one of Starfleet’s missions.
TWoK is a good movie. Particularly to the average moviegoer and less than fanatic Star Trek fan. It works as a movie. I would just argue it doesn’t work as TOS. It is imo more racked with inconsistencies and fantasy and in particular, the feeling it was made by people who had no idea how the military worked than your average TOS episode. If TMP can be faulted for, among other things, trying so hard that it lost the TOS aesthetic and became something else altogether, then TWoK can be faulted for trying so little that it lost the TOS aesthetic and became something else altogether. In this way it feels, to me, more like a third season episode. A good one, but still sloppy in the ways third season episodes can be faulted for not feeling like they are in the same universe as seasons 1 and 2.
Mine is a minority opinion to be sure. I don’t find TWoK fascinating. I find it entertaining. TMP otoh, despite its myriad dramatic faults, is fascinating. That world it created in two hours transcends what TOS did in 79 episodes in terms of verisimilitude. And I guess that is what mattered to me.

An interesting thought but, while not explicitly stated, Ruth was presented as older than Kirk was at the Academy, the actress is 32, and Kirk says she hasn't aged in the 15 years since.
Actor age generally has no relevance to character age, ergo we really don't know how old Ruth should be. A 50 something actor played Bruce Maddox in Picard despite Maddox being at least 83. Patrick Stewart was younger than Picard throughout both TNG and Picard. Kirk was originally older than Shatner until the 'Deadly Years' episode had their ages match (drafts for Conscience of the King had Kirk as a young ensign on Tarsus IV and not the 13 year old kid he canonically ended up being). And so on.
That's different. Picard and Maddox, for example, are supposed to be older and not look it because people live longer in the 24th century. So you're not going to hire an 80 year old to do that.
Usually if you want someone to play an 18 year old, you hire someone who looks 18 even if they're actually older. Shirley Bonne didn't look like she was supposed to be playing someone 15 younger than she was.
Shatner was 36 when they filmed The Deadly Years. Kirk was 34. Close but not a match. Close enough to not matter. I don't remember ever reading Kirk was supposed to be older. But I did read he was supposed to be the youngest Captain in Starfleet.
I get the impression that Janet Wallace didn't have ~10 year old Kirk baby lurking in the background during The Deadly Years ep., so, Janet couldn't be a Carol Marcus stand in. We need another blonde. Wait, didn't Kirk almost marry a blond technician back in his Starfleet Academy instructor days? 
The non-canon assumption is that is Carol Marcus.
That's what I've assumed for decades. Makes perfect sense to me.
I seem to remember one of the Best of Trek articles on Khan postulated that Carol was the "blonde lab technician" that Gary pointed Kirk towards.

Eh. It's the 2250s. Flexible enough I can imagine a student pursuing a doctorate working as a lab tech on Starbase One. Today's doctorate students have some flexibility in jobs and training and 23rd century ones likely have even moreso in both categories.
and Bruce Mars, born Oct 23, 1935, turned 31 during the filming of Shore Leave but explicitly states in the episode that Finnegan is "twenty years old."
I always assumed it was Ruth before TWOK, based on Kirk's gobsmacked reaction ("Don't you like birds, Mister Rodriguez?").
