Who got shafted?

Jadzia. Not Jadzia Dax, but Jadzia the host.

We know almost nothing of who Jadzia is and what unique traits she contributed to the symbiont. Ezri had a much more fully developed personality in one year than Jadzia did in six.

Agreed. After watching the series again, I realized that Jadzia wasn't as great a character as I thought. I still like her but I wish we got to know more about her. What was her full name? Did she have a family? I think I liked that aspect of Ezri the most in that we learned how the host and the symbiont really do need to work with each other to get through life and how hard that is.

The point of Jake was to show Sisko as a father... WEll, they did that. Jake was now an adult... And for you adults out there, you know that realistically you don't see your dad every day. JaKe had his own thing, and it was on his own. Frankly, I am glad they didn't have him going on Defiant missions every week, or worst yet, saving the day!

Eh... Gonna have to disagree.

The writers would have had a free pass to let Jake languish had they not made him a main character. But they did. So the oversight can't be excused.

The fact of the matter is that a number of secondary characters saw more memorable screen time and more character development than Jake. And that's not the way you play the game. Especially given how good of an actor Cirroc was when given the opportunity.

Jake got shafted because they had a stick up their butts about making him the anti-Wesley and therefore he became essentially irrelevant to any ongoing plots.

I appreciate the sentiment (Moore's "let's show someone who doesn't want to join Starfleet") but they essentially castrated the usefulness of the character who, as represented by a top billing and capable actor, deserved more.

See, this is where I disagree. I enjoyed seeing the development of secondary characters... frankly I enjoyed that it was Nog going to the academy and not Jake. One of the things that made DS9 so great was it's robust secondary characters and development of them... If Jake was not fully developed into continuing story lines, its because he had no place there. Why would Jake be on the Defiant in dangerous situations time and again? While Jake was in the title credits, his primary focus was to show Ben Sisko as a father.

Yes, and that's a good thing. One of the things that TNG and Voyager is lampooned for is that the main characters are always the "experts" going on away missions. ie-the total lack of secondary characters
And that's not the way you play the game.
Says who? The character fits the story. Given the limited role Jake played after the 4th season, I'm amazed his character wasn't shipped off to live with his grandfather and Cirroc fired

He was a good solid actor, I would never claim otherwise... but having scenes with him for the sake of having scenes with him is wrong
