Who got into fights in school?

I've always tried to live by the following credo... even when I've had moments of weakness and failed. It's served me in good stead ever since I heard Malcolm McDowell say it in a movie when I was a kid.

"The first person to raise a fist is the first person to run out of ideas."

Not bad for one of the Droogs.

That quote is from 'Time After Time' and McDowell's character was H.G. Wells. He was pursuing Jack The Ripper (David Warner) to 1979 San Francisco. One of my favorite films, even though Wells doesn't seem all that realistic through the script.

Warner has another memorable line, after they reach 1979:

"In my time, I was a freak; here, I am an amateur."

As far as fights, I've had a few. Dandruff, acne, and the like will bring on the comments. And there are those people who simply do not understand anything short of a physical response. Sometimes attempts at diplomacy will only go so far.

Let's just say that by nature I am a Quiet Man. ;)

One of my all-time favorite movies! I saw it for the first time when it first premiered on cable in the early '80s and it's been one of my favorite Malcolm McDowell and time travel films ever since. Excellent flick. Four stars.

Completely agree. I don't know how many times I watched that movie back in the day.

I also have Karl Alexander's original novel that was used as the basis for the film. The interesting thing is that my first copy of it was a Scholastic edition and it said 'abridged.' I always wondered what that was all about. When I finally found a regular edition, I found out. That photograph in John's pocket watch? That's his sister. He had an incestuous relationship with her that was edited out of the Scholastic edition.

I've never been in a fight in my life...or even close. I think I always had a way with words that would make people leave me alone.

Well I got what I was wishing for! Funny how the universe behaves like that

I was on a del this evening and got into an argument with a drunk guy. He wasn't backing down, I wasn't backing down (I had work to do, get out of the way idiot!) and we got into a little push and shove. He was an abusive foul mouthed fellow but he seemed to back off after I pushed him a couple of times. Still swearing at me of course

It wasn't a fight 'proper' but I didn't back off! For the first time ever, I dominated another man. And it was awesome! You see, in the past my body would have done the 'flight' thing not the 'fight' thing. This time, while I was aware of the fear, or the adrenaline, whatever it is, it didn't paralyse me. I was still me and able to act as I saw fit.

Fantastic!!

THe evolution continues my friends!!!

Perhaps I will learn to swim next!!

In any event let this be a lesson to everyone out there

When I'm delivering pizzas, get out of my way.

Well, congratulations.

Are you burdened with wisdom now?

I got into fights, but they were never too vicious. I was smart enough to talk my way out of situations involving kids with bad reps. I was a civil fighter. Punches above the waist only, and never to the face. I don't remember any of my fights ever getting out of hand or needing to be broken up. I feel like they would end with the first preemptive punch I landed, because of the sheer surprise of my victims that such a nice kid would lash out over stupid taunts.
