Who did Spock mind meld with before "Dagger of the Mind"?

Not to get too deep into “25% different” conspiracy theories, but that could also be part of the reason they’ve been avoiding using “Cage” characters, and why several TOS characters/names are drastically changed (M’Benga is older, Kyle is a different ethnicity, Mitchell is a different ethnicity and gender). Chapel would get a pass because of the Roddenberry connection, Rod would be willing and able to sign off, and Kirk and the other main-seven TOS characters who have appeared on SNW would’ve had their approvals secured with ST09, if not earlier.

Feels like the smarter play there would have been to create new characters.

They did with Ortega and La'an (with unneeded Khan tie-in) . . . but yeah. You and the others summarized the IP landscape pretty well, although studios can and do find or exploit loopholes when it's their IP. Nevertheless, this change of certain likenesses is another delightful element—whatever its root cause—in support of my preferred, mind-relaxing "alternate reality" approach to SNW. :techman:

For your last point, though, I’ve heard many visual artists from painters to sculptors all agree that there’s something weirdly undefinable about Shatner’s face, especially when he was in his thirties and younger, and that he’s a very challenging likeness to capture.
As someone who's drawn Shatner a few times, can confirm.

It may not be as easy as drawing a happy Bones McCoy, but I fail to see why not. Double the few and it likely gets easier. Start with the squint* and the curly cowlick and you're on the way.

(*such as when Kirk admires T'Pau from a distance.)

There was always wiggle room until he melded with James T Kirk in SNW, who's 100% human.
He did? See, it's stuff like this that makes Kurtzman-Trek a completely different universe to me. I wish Memory Alpha hadn't standardized on treating it all as a single continuity, because so many pages there now read like it's been invaded by Memory Beta. Imagine if the history of Mirror Spock or JJverse Pike was all commingled with the standard character histories; the Kurtzman stuff feels like that. So much discontinuity, even to the point where some characters have awkward ethnicity rewrites. (Before anyone yells racism, I want to say that it's jarring no matter what the before-and-after ethnicities are and I would be equally or more unhappy if someone like Stone, Tamura, Thule*, Lewis, or Singh suddenly became a white person in some prequel retcon.) These history rewrites are a whole different order of magnitude than just the minor anachronisms that popped up over the first 40 or 50 years.

* Thule, pronounced TOO-lee, is the Inuit character played by frequent background performer Ron Veto. (Memory Alpha has for years incorrectly called him Harrison, in essence depriving the Enterprise of its visual representation of this perpetually under-represented ethnicity.)

I don't see this as a "can't please everyone" situation. The power of the moment of Spock's meld with Van Gelder is that he's never done one with a human before. There's no point in him warning McCoy about it if he's done it so casually with other humans before. Are we supposed to believe he was lying about this? Or did he forget? Or is this set in an alternative timeline with an alternative Spock?

Funny since SNW is supposed to turn into TOS when its run ends, but you can't please everyone I guess
But it isn’t. They casually break continuity as they please. They reintroduce TOS characters as much younger than they would have been in TOS, like Scotty. In TOS Scotty was the oldest one or contemporary to McCoy, but in SNW he’s about the same age or younger than Kirk.. In SNW MBenga looks older than he does years later in TOS. And how is it he is CMO under Pike, but subordinate to McCoy in TOS? They keep bringing in Kirk when it was established that Kirk met Pike only once before when he took over command of the Enterprise, and then not again till he sees him again in “The Menagerie.”

They move pieces around as they see fit, totally ignoring what had already been established. They’re not interested in doing a prequel. They want familiar names just to use it as a veneer to do their genre homages. It’s just a reboot and a very shallow one at that.
