It was The Return, a novel I had very fond memories of until I finally re-read it 3 weeks ago. It was terrible.
i tried reading The Return after having read Ashes of Eden which i really enjoyed as it really did feel like Star Trek VII with the original cast one last time (could imagine Shatner behind the camera again directing his story only this time making a classic after having learned from all the mistakes made on V) - there was even a comic adapation which made it feel even more so like a Trek VII if it had come out in 93 or 94 instead of Generations
anyway i was looking foward to Return as similarly it looked to be a sequel to Generations if theyd done The Search For Kirk for the 8th film. shatner writing again made it almost feel canon. and it had the borg (FC had only just come out) but i couldnt make it past the first couple of chapters.
i intend to try again soon

One of the two or three ST short stories I wrote when I took a writing class ("The Gray People") was a Borg origin story that, as I recall, managed to tie in V'GER, Nomad, and Jackson Roykirk.

I try to not reread Star Trek and Star Wars novels that I decided I liked before I turned 18.

I imagine, for example, Yesterday's Son, Prime Directive, and The Final Reflection each still shining strongly today, years later (having read all of them back in elementary/middle school in the '80s/early '90s).
^Yes, having re-read all of those I can confirm that they do hold up!
Oh, I'm sure some of them hold up! But if I reread none of them, they all will.
