Indeed. When I read implications that the producers are lazy, or incompetent or bad I just cringe.

Ditto with the kneejerk assumption that any liberties taken with "canon" are the result of ignorance. "Stupid Hollywood! They've obviously never watched the older stuff/read the original novel/read the comics/etc."

Or maybe they did what they did on purpose, for what seemed like a good idea at the time. This may or may not have been the right call, or turned out the way they hoped, but let's not insult people by assuming that their artistic judgment calls have to be based on ignorance or malice or whatever.

I watched TOS during it's original run. Saw every movie in the theater. But my actual Trek is the setting for the FASA rpg. Something about the way the universe was depicted just sings for me.

In my heart, TOS and the first six movies. I just liked that simpler time before Trek content snowballed into infinity. I even kinda like the bad episodes.

TNG comes to mind first and strongest, I like and respect the original and Deep Space Nine a lot as well, though they all had flaws, but TNG I think was the most ambitious, confident and successful despite the odds and challenges against it. The original is also particularly impressive for how much it generally feels not dated but occasionally it, or elements of it, does feel like that was a really long time ago, different era and style I prefer at least a little less.

So now that I've seen all three new live-action shows, I've updated my opinion: TOS is my old Star Trek, we don't live together anymore, but we still have the connection. DSC is my new Star Trek and PIC has become my new Star Trek too. So DSC and PIC are both my new Star Trek. SNW is my old Star Trek's cousin visiting my new Star Trek. I don't mind that they're visiting, but they don't live here. PIC moved in with DSC permanently. SNW is hanging out.

TNG is where it's at for me. TOS is a close second but I think TNG defines what Star Trek really means to me. The styles, the format, the plot, all lines up for me in a way where nothing else does.

Anyway, TOS, TNG, and TOS movies would all be legit answers for me. Instinctively went with TOS but those are the ones that feel like "real" Star Trek to me with the others being spin offs of varying quality.
