Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA?

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

Along a similar line, I would love to know if Luke is still in touch with Obi-Wan, Yoda, and his father.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

I'm pretty much expecting Hayden and Ewan to return to their roles as Force Ghosts during the Sequel Trilogy (and for Yoda to make at least one appearance as an apparition with Frank Oz voicing him).

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

I would be very surprised if we see that. Yoda has an outside chance, someone doing an old Obi-Wan impression for voice over only or with a CGI double maybe slightly less likely.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

I think McGregor has a far better chance of showing up than Christensen does. His Obi-Wan was just about one of the only parts of the PT most people enjoyed. But I would like to see Christensen given another chance with (presumably) better dialogue to work with and (assuredly) better direction.

If they were going to bring him back, it should have been to play Kylo Ren; revealed at the end when his helmet comes off as an imperfect result of cloning Vader.

I wouldn't. For all the derision (both earned and completely obnoxious and over-the-top) that Hayden and the Prequels have received Anakin Skywalker is such an important character to the overall Saga - either as a flesh-and-blood human and Jedi Knight or as a cybernetic Sith Lord - that I could easily see one of the directors and the screenwriters creating a scene wherein Luke communes with the Force Ghosts of one, two or all three of the characters and asking for the guidance of his father in making a critical decision.

We know Anakin learned how to survive physical death and maintain his individual consciousness after he passed away on the second Death Star and is now one with the Force, so that closing image from ROTJ opens up a wide array of possibilities for using Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda as apparitions in at least one of the new films. Now, whether somebody wants to see that is completely irrelevant to their appearance being something that can be properly written to help drive the story and get Luke from point A to point B in that script and not be just a moment of gratuitous fanwank with no narrative purpose.

Yoda is the easiest one to reuse for obvious reasons and Ewan has said on numerous occasions that he'll be happy to return as Obi-Wan if he's asked to do so, but don't rule out Hayden reappearing as Anakin, however briefly. Just because they're steering away from the Prequels doesn't mean they're always going to actively avoid references to them.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

While I'm very excited to see the original characters return, I'm more excited to see what the new characters are like. We've already gotten three movies with the original cast, so we know a lot about them, but we still have a lot to learn about the new characters. I love what we've seen in the trailers, and I can't wait to see more.

True, plus, the Hayden-looking Anakin IS somewhat popular... from The Clones Wars cartoons. Which mitigates some of the distaste for his Prequel movie appearances.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

^
True. It's not as if the franchise created an entirely new physical appearance for Anakin in The Clone Wars just because some fans don't like Hayden Christensen. Hayden's likeness is still used on almost all the packaging for the Prequel-era Anakin figures and other toys and collectibles so Lucasfilm and its licensees aren't running from Hayden the way some fans do.

In other news, we finally got a peek at a screen image of Maz Kanata in a new Disney Channel commercial for the movie that just aired (on the UK Disney Channel, I believe). I don't have the link handy, but the image is currently on Facebook and social media and it's a shot of Finn holding Luke's/Anakin's lightsaber and Maz Kanata's head and face are visible in the lower left-hand side of the screencapture.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

She's the alien with the goggles on the poster, so we actually saw her a while ago, but nobody knew it. I think the only major characters we haven't seen now are Luke, and Snoke. There's also another character we haven't seen in movie footage or pictures who comes with the Millennium Falcon LEGO set, whose name I can't remember, but I'm not sure how important of a character he is.
Edit: I just remembered another character I'm excited about in TFA, BB-8.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

True, but this is the first movie footage that clearly shows her face. Until now she's just been an arm handing Luke's lightsaber to Leia and a tiny face on a poster.

It doesn't? I feel like those mean the same thing. (I hope not, though.)

Is that known to be accurate or just speculation at this point?

I think it's pretty much confirmed by this point without somebody having come out and officially saying the hands are Leia's. The costume worn by the actress taking the lightsaber matches the one worn by Carrie Fisher in the Comic-Con footage reel and the recent trailers, and the hands look just like hers.

Well, steering away likely means not a lot of direct visual throwbacks to those films and references to them every five or ten minutes. The Prequels, though, are a major part of the official timeline and they play a huge role in the current animated series being produced, so it's not as if Lucasfilm is going to pretend they don't exist just to satisfy some of the more vocal critics who didn't like them.

They're still making money from the Prequels and all of their associated merchandise and I can't imagine them turning their backs on the films just because they're controversial and unpopular with some people.

They do? I haven't been watching it.

All I know is that Luminara turned up.

...so to speak.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

Some of the events in the Prequels as well as TCW are referenced more than once. As for Master Luminara, she was a little stiff in her appearance on the new series.

So to speak.

:p

Way to kill a thread Eddie ^_^

I highly recommend the new series. It feels sooo... right. So much like the old movies.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

It's a gift and a power and I try to use it sparingly. Down that path lay the Dark Side, and I don't have the right shoes for it.

;)

Another character I'm looking forward to seeing is Maz Kanata. There was a report online a few days ago that her role in the film was cut down in editing and she lost screen time, but whatever is left should be very fascinating to watch given what little we know of the character thus far.

I hope whatever got cut is put on the home video releases as part of the deleted scenes and bonus features. Some have called Maz Kanata the Yoda of the new trilogy and if so I hope we get to see more of her in action.

Re: Which Characters Are You Looking Forward to Seeing the Most in TFA

I think a lot of people just said that because she is a small alien that is supposed to be very old. Her role in the film is likely to be very different.
