Where would you rather live: on a space ship or on a space station?

If you had choice between living on a space ship or a space station in the Star Trek universe, which would it be? Keep in mind, the space ship doesn't have to be any of the Enterprises, Voyager or the Defiant and neither does the space station have to be DS9, but they can if you want.

Frankly, as interesting as it would be to travel the stars, I've always found space stations to be fascinating for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I would still want to travel the universe a bit, but there's something appealing about life on a space station to me.

Assuming that the station had facilities like DS9 - I'd pick that one. Living on a Starship might be fun for a while - but I'm not sure I could deal with cramped quarters and less social facilities for a largely extended stretch of time.

If I want to take a wander down to the shops, I don't want to have to wait six months in a cramped cabin to maybe get there if the captain lets me go on an away mission.

Aboard a flying battleship, bristling with death-dealing weaponry, I'd feel as safe as a newborn, cradled in his mum's arms. Besides which, as Captain Kirk so eloquently put it in Generations ...

"... Sounds like fun!"

In the Trek universe, spaceships consume more power through propulsion and maintaining gravity like effects. I'll take a space station for safety.

space station for me as it would be like living at a holiday destination with all the tourists to keep you occupied and locals for a nice community feel

A starship. Being able to change the scenery at will would be nice, especially if a location started to become hostile for some reason. It would also be easier to avoid door-to-door salesmen and jehovah's witnesses.

What is the starship doing? Do I get to explore the planets it visits? Do I have a job on the ship? Ship sounds more exciting unless it's like spending six months measuring gas emissions in a nebula.

Definitely not aboard a warship. I prefer DS9 with its holosuits. Occasionally a party at Quark's. Paying Vic Fontaine a visit.

Good question. I've often debated this in my head. I think I'd probably want my main ''base of operations'' so to speak to be at a Space Station but at the same time I'd want to be able to at least occasionally travel the stars so as long as I'm able to board shuttlecraft or starships or whatever I'd have the best of both worlds.

There is, of course, a third option: TOS had starbase facilities that were located on a planet's surface rather than in orbit.

In theory, the Galaxy Class might have been intended to bridge the gap between the two extremes: providing, of sorts, a 'floating starbase' more than it was a starship. In theory, anyway. In practical terms, TNG seldom explored this concept.

Both. I'd live on a space station that has its own starship (like DS9 and the Defiant) so that I could have the occasional variety.

I would choose a space station, because it would (I assume) have gathering places like the Promenade or 10 Forward, facilities like Stellat Cartography and The Arbor, Holodecks/Suites, changing personnel and visitors, and opportunities for excursions off-station, from time to time...

Neither. Some first class human colony PLANET with a metropolitan populace from all over the Federation but very little tactical value and no proximity to any of the borders with enemies of the Federation would suit me just fine, thanks.

A starship sounds good, but I'd like the best of both worlds and not really be on a deep space expedition. A few weeks in space at a time, and then some time planetside.
