Where have you been recently?

You clearly did not, other wise we wouldn't have had this pretty pointless conversation.

This conversation should have stopped as soon as I mentioned to you that it was a reference to the Tales of Canterbury. That was enough of an explanation for anyone with a normal education.

Really, like that are we. You make a massively left field reference to a pretty old text, one that I didn't read in school and only have a passing knowledge of because it's not on the national curriculum and given my responses throughout, it would be obvious I wasn't entirely sure what you were meaning. So thanks for actually explaining what you meant. :techman:

Well, you're welcome. There was no slight intended, I assure you.

Recently I've been to such far-flung places as Syracuse, the Thousand Islands, Harlem, and Hell's Kitchen (I don't think Times Square/Midtown count as particularly exotic). I'd love to be a world traveler - fortunately, New York is diverse enough to keep things interesting until I become one.

Two more recent excursions for me.

Last Friday I went to Bristol Zoo Gardens. Not a bad little trip. Admittedly we'd have preferred to go to Longleat Safari Park but the prices for that place are through the roof right now! However, we did get some good ticket offers (free child with every full paying adult, and 15% off the adult price) so we took it up. The day itself was great although the drive home was a nightmare! Sat-nav tried to take us down side roads to avoid rush hour traffic on the M4. Not gonna do that again, I think we went through several villages that time forgot.

Also visited the Cardiff Bay Festival with the P1 Superstock Powerboat Racing. Hmmm think I prefer my motorsports with wheels...

I take day trips to Atlanta. It is no New York City but over the years I've come to appreciate it more. Especially the area known as Midtown.

I just spent a couple of days there camped out to see AC/DC. I consider it my best trip there ever!!

I also went to the Center for Puppetry Arts where they have a Jim Henson exhibit. And also the Georgia Aquarium.

I've done more in Atlanta this year than I've done ever as Things are a little more flexible now.

Although, I'm a little down about having to miss DragonCon (again!) but there is always next year.

Most of my adventures keep me up and down through California, but in the span of the last two years, I've been to Yosemite, Big Bear, Redwoods National Park, Mammoth Mountain, Mammoth Lake, Mono Lake, Big Pine, Hearst Castle, June Lake, the Tioga Pass, the Wind Wolves Preserve, and Devil's Postpile. We also managed to get to the Oregon caves, as well as Calico Ghost Town.

We were in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. The fall foliage was just beginning its spectacular change.

I just spent three days in Los Angeles. I went to the USC game on Saturday, and the Rams game on Sunday.

:techman:

And I'm going back tomorrow for a conference.

Not super-recently, but my latest trip abroad was to Lądek-Zdrój in Poland for a neutrino physics conference this March (I'm still an undergraduate, so I was a little out of place, but it was just too exciting to pass up). This was my first time in Poland, and because my hotel was only about an hour's walking distance from the Czech border, I was able to "czech" another country off on my list over an extended lunch break.

Absolutely beautiful scenery there, especially on the last few days when we were lucky enough to have snow.

More recently, but without leaving the country, I was on Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea where we have a summer home. I'm currently looking into the Gutnish language, or gutamål, which my great-grandfather spoke.

Unfortunately, there are very few speakers (estimates run from 1000 to 5000), and Gutnish isn't actually recognized as its own language by the Swedish government. However, the Gutnish Language Guild (Gutamålsgillet) is very active, and even has a nice smartphone app with a dictionary and a Gutnish word of the day. Today's word is årdflaug ("word-fly"), a neologism referring to fax machines. However, as faxing isn't exactly in vogue anymore, it's also used to refer to SMS.

So out of my hotel window I can see the new Harry Potter World at Universal Studios.

I am damned tempted to go.

I just spent a week in New Mexico -- saw Carlsbad Caverns, Roswell, Ruidoso, White Sands, the Space Museum, Las Cruces, the Rio Grande, the Very Large Array, numerous museums and and such in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Kinda awesome. Drove probably a thousand miles.
