Where are the percenty shields?

In TMP it seemed they started making a distinction between "forcefields" and "deflectors" (which were also mentioned in the official tie-in publications) - I'd always assumed the bubbles were the former and the skintights the latter. Of course, the later movies/shows ignored the forcefields.

I thought deflectors were emitted by the deflector dish, for pushing away space debris, rocks, etc.

I feel like that distinction wasn't made until well past TOS. The show, and maybe TMP, seemed to use Deflectors and Shields interchangeably (but occasionally saying both at the same time).

In any case, it would make sense that the deflectors actually deflect.

True. I think they interchanged between shields and deflector shields in TOS but I am not sure. I will have to watch "balance of terror" and some other eps to see what lexicon was used.
