When you first heard of DS9, did you like its premise?

I have to admit I did not, since exploration was not primary. A station, religion, past oppression, etc. didn't appeal to me. In truth, it was bringing the Dominion into the plot, as well as The Way of the Warrior, which made me a fan.

I was 5 or 6 when I first heard about DS9, so I was excited immediately even though I really knew nothing about it before watching. I was just a little kid stoked on some new Star Trek. It remains to be my favorite series and that will probably never change. I thought that it's shift in focus to social and cultural themes is what made me really fall in love with this show. It had a depth that other Trek shows lacked.

Thinking back to elementary school, I was big of Star Trek: Voyager and that series appealed more to me than DS9. I didn't care for the idea of the Prophets or the complexity of the storyline (I never watched week to week). As a result, I didn't really "watch" Ds9 until I was much older and went on a Trek binge in late high school/early college that has continued for the last 7 years :).

After rewatching all of the series, Voyager (my childhood gem, I still have a softspot for it) would actually be my least favorite series as a whole, and Ds9 would be my clear favorite.

The first time I heard of DS9 when as I around 10 in a video rental store in Suva, Fiji where I picked up the Emissary VHS tape purely because it had the big Star Trek titles at the top and rented it. So I had no prior knowledge of the show before I watched the pilot. At the time that informed my opinion, which was I wasn't into the show.

I remember when DS9 came out in first run. I didn't know what to make of it. I thought of it as TNG-lite, and watched it only sporadically. It wasn't until season 3, and the introduction of the Defiant, that it really grabbed my interest, and it only got better from that point on. Story arc-wise, if not character-wise, DS9 definitely surpassed TNG and TOS. Now, I can't imagine the Trek universe without DS9!

The first time I saw anything about DS9 I was 7 (I think), at my grandmother's house and there was a 1-minute long ad for it. I didn't know what it was, I thought that it was going to be a one-off TV movie featuring Picard, some black guy and a woman in a funny hat (Kai Opaka). It looked dark, slow and more than a little dull. I remember watching Emissary at my other grandmother's house, but all I really remember from it was the scene where Sisko and Jadzia are in the wormhole seeing different things, and I thought that was pretty neat. I remember seeing other episodes in the first season and liking them, but I must point that I was very young. ;)

I only really became a fan when I joined a Trek fan club during the middle of the third season. At first I was really excited to get my first glimpse at Voyager, but I quickly became more interested in the goings on at DS9, especially after The Way of the Warrior.

Yeah, TGB and I were both total younglings when DS9 premiered. On my side, though, my late grandmother was a big-time Trekkie and avidly watched TNG, as well as DS9 when it premiered.

So I have a bunch of 'memory flashes' of obscure little things regarding the first couple of seasons and I thought various aspects were cool, but boy, did it go over my head for a while.

Nope, and I still don't. At least, not in its original form as of Emissary.

IMO:

Bajor was occupied: who cares? I certainly don't, and it being occupied is not in and of itself a reason why I should care that it was. Hearing Bajorans whine about the occupation just makes me care even less, not more, and hate them, not like them.

DS9 is an outpost near Bajor: again, who cares? To care about that there would have to be a reason to care about Bajor.

Wormhole aliens who don't know about humanity: yet again, who cares? If I am going to care about an alien, it has to be interesting and present at least some sort of new innovation, and above all, entertainment. DS9's wormhole aliens fail in all regards.

DS9 as an outpost for new races coming through the wormhole: this is actually the only good and promising element of DS9's original premise, but aside from Tosk, the show did absolutely nothing good with it. Certainly though DS9 could have been a great show by telling TOS-style stories using this element, yet it dropped the ball here by abandoning it.

When they changed DS9's premise at the end of Season 2 to guardian of the wormhole and AQ from the Dominion threat, that is when DS9's premise started to get good.

Yep, some people hated the original premise. It's definitely not for everyone, but then, what is?

I found the Bajorans and their plight to be one of the most intriguing parts of the show.

I was either six or seven when it started. For me at the time it was just a show my parents watched. I didn't get it and I didn't care. My dolls were more important to me
But after I started to watch Voyager I was nine and I became more willing to watch DS9, so I started watching it in the fifth season. The very first episode I ever watched was Trial and Tribble-ations and it's still my favorite.
