WHen will you watch Discovery? Will you get All Access?

Being in Australia I'll probably watch it on Netflix as I already have it. My concern is if there will be a delay because I don't trust Twitter not to spoil it.
Netflix International divisions will get each weekly episode 24 hours after their release in the US & Canada. Just avoid Twitter... ;)

You always have to be careful online with these streaming series. Most people dont watch them right after they are released.

So hopefully people will be careful at the forum not to spoil anything about specific episodes outside of the episode threads.

Within 24 hours usually means the next morning in the local time after the original premiere. When streaming service's local staff wake up and click the correct button to publish the episode.

For example for Finland it might be just a delay of 4-5 hours in the case of USA based shows and about twelve hours with British shows.

That could be what I'll be doing, depending on how long it takes to release DVD/BDs of the series, if they ever do, since I won't subscribe to CBSAA's commercials.

I imagine the mods will have rules about what can be discussed and when as new episodes come out. Or the thread titles will clearly indicate spoiler discussions.

The current spoiler policy is

"Until an episode has aired in the United States, do not post plot info in the subject title of your thread"

I see no real need to change it - once it's on CbsAA it's fine to talk about freely. Most of the world had to survive with spoilers for stuff aired in the us but not elsewhere for years.

But there is no "airing" of the episode with streaming services. Episode is put online and people watch them when they notice it has been added and they have time to watch it. Episodes might be released in the morning when most people are working or at school and wont have time to watch them until later that time.

So there should be some sort of an grace period after episode has been published. Until that time episode discussion should be only in the episode specific threads, that hopefully will be created every week. Maybe couple of days or until next episode is released.

I definitely plan on watching the pilot on CBS....but for the rest of the show... will the 1 week free access currently advertised on TrekBBS be available then? (I haven't clicked yet, but will soon)

If so, I might binge watch 3 or 4 episodes in a week. I sure don't have the budget now to do so. I might be an extra $1-$2 if it were an add on to Comcast.

I hate to endanger the show, but will it be worth the cost???
It certainly will be.

A 13 episode season.

The first (two?) will be shown on CBS.

That leaves what, 11-12 episodes?

One per week.

That's 3 months or possibly less.

$6 a month if you don't mind commercials.

$10 a month if you don't want any commercials.

I'll pay less than a tank of gas for new trek. (30 bucks), then cancel. If I don't like it I won't re-up. If I do, then I will.

And you don't have to worry about endangering trek. Any US purchase is icing on the cake. Smart move by CBS here not realying on the ever whiny US market to pay for the show.

I will watch it, I won't get CBS All Access to do so. Don't like the service or the content provider.

But that's the same for old fashioned TV. In the states it would be broadcast at 8pm Eastern, but in LA it would be 5PM, and I believe the same program is broadcast later in the day. In the TNG through VOY days people would tape it and watch at a more convenient time, in the Enterprise days you'd Tivo it and watch it at leisure. As long as the 'release date' is known, you can either watch it on release date, or not. If it's released in the morning, then you'd know not to visit the forum until you'd got home and watched it later that day.

You're more likely to see spoilers on places like twitter and facebook than somewhere where you actively go to watch trek.

If you put in an arbitrary delay from "first possible time of watching" then what would that delay be, 24 hours? 1 week? 1 month? 5 years?

I agree unaired stuff should have spoiler warnings, but once it's available to watch (and trekbbs has always defined that as "available in the US") it makes no sense. You have a conversation about the pilot going on (discussing the fact the captain is wearing a red AND yellow checkered uniform), but then 4 weeks later some new information comes along to explain that (faulty transporter actually merged two characters ala tuvix). Do you have to be on guard to not let any information about that out until some arbitrary point? Do you have to remember which episode every bit of minutae appeared in to write "spoilers for episode 4"? What if the conversation drifts and information from people who have watched episode 5, 6 and 7 makes its way into the thread.

I'll just avoid this part of the forum until I've seen the episodes, but I hope people will have the decency not to put spoilers in titles as those show up in sidebars as well.

Thanks for the responses so far...here are the answers I recall reading here...

  1. Not watching it
  2. Watching pilot on CBS, then we'll see
  3. CBS All Access
  4. Netflix (outside US)
  5. Netflix (in US)
  6. Blu ray / DVD
  7. At a friend's house
  8. Bootleg way
  9. Other

Am I missing anything?

10. Stealing it

Which I think deserves a healthy dose of scorn and shame. I can't judge people who are in legitimate financial distress. But broadly speaking, I think it's reprehensible to pirate the show. CBS doesn't care, they'll just cancel it and move on. It's the creators who suffer. People shouldn't kid themselves about the ethics of stealing from artists. Especially from a show and a franchise they claim to love and support. There's no finger-wagging emoji, but there should be.
