When the Grammar Nazi's strike!

Few years back, I was writing letters back and forth with an former coworker after I moved to Maryland (she doesn't like using a computer) and it got a bit unnerving when she kept using "here" when she meant either "hear" or literally "here" to the point where it was confusing. I tried to encourage her to be more careful. I haven't heard from her.

oh well.

I remember being told as a child that 'hear' looks like it an ear in it (meaning the letter 'a') but that could also mean the word 'ear'.

I was told the remember piece was a 'piece of pie'

That definitely could be remember by the "finite". That separate had part of a part (par).

I have a bug up my ass about people who express agreement or support by writing “Here, here” instead of the correct “hear, hear.” The former is how you call a pet.

What happen to all of the grammer Nazis? I use to see them all the time on the message boards correcting people's grammer. I remember I use to get corrected all the time on IMDB's messages boards. What was really insulting, I would have non English speaking Europeans correcting my English.

No, those with low standards have always been in the majority. That's why society creeps along so slowly.

One of my particular thorns. People who use 'definate' and 'definately' drive me crazy. I don't know whether this is just a UK problem. I hope so. I wouldn't like all of you to be suffering this pain.

I'll put my hand up to being guilty of that one: I try to at least remember to look it up though! (Really, all the Is shouldn't be that hard to manage <shrug>)

I used to say definite. Someone corrected me on it and I fixed it. That's a spelling concern, not a grammar one, though. I think I stopped making spelling mistakes when I downloaded spell check for firefox ;)

Anyway, as can be seen in the above example, if someone corrects me politely, I say "woops," fix the mistake, and move on. It's only a big deal if people make a big deal out of it.

It's standard with Firefox. On the advanced tab of the Options, click "Check my spelling as I type."

I don't have a problem getting through posts with bad grammar and spelling but there are a small handful of posters here who have a habit of forgetting entire words in their zeal to reply. It can make divining their intention a bit of a challenge, especially when it is something crucial like "did" or "not".

For some reason, when I type too fast, I have a tendency to completely forget my negatives: not, no, etc. It has the effect of making my points the total opposite of what I intend.
