when SHATNER retires...

I have to admit that Leonard Nimoy's retiring didn't really effect me because the guy has hardly been on TV since the 60s. Yeah, he's here and there, but not like Shatner; Shatner has been doing TV non-stop it seems since Hooker. Hooker - Star trek Movies--Rescue 911--more movies...boston legal--Raw Nerve--tv specials..i mean its been non-stop.

And I realize that Shatner has been on my TV, or i movies, for most of my life. And so when I think of a time when shatner retires to his ranch, and isn't on TV or doing commercials or being on Leno/Letterman/Obrien...I feel sad. I really do. Yeah, the guy's just an entertainer, but more so than any other performer in my life, be it a singer or a movie actor, Tv star, whatever, I have by far been following Shatner longer than any other performer. They need to discover some kind of drug to keep this guy going...

Shatner has his nay-sayers, in fact, many of them are on this board. But not me. I have been backing Shatner through the good and bad years. When he was the butt of jokes due to his acting style, and his so called 'bad treatment' of his fellow actors, which I still mainly blame on their envious ambitions. My kids love him now. My oldest son and daughter, and my wife and I, got to meet him ten years ago for about three minutes and we still talk about it. Then by chance I met him again on an airplane, got to sit next to him for about three hours, (which many of you might remember) and wow...just knowing that this guy is even asked about retirement makes me....sad.

Go shatner go!!! And when it's time, and you think retirement has arrived, just know that there are millions of us who really do appreciate what you've provided us; a life time of great memories.

I second that sentiment. I've read very candid interviews with him, and met him here in NY at the 92nd St. Y. I know there was a time that he was open about being afraid of death, as many of us are.

His heart always seems to be in the right place in the last 20 years, doing amazing, and amusing, things for charity and I love that about him.

Lately, I have had some thoughts about his eventual passing away; I'm a big Kirk and Shatner fan, and for me that will be a very big, sad deal.

Ditto for me. I think we'll lose something great when he goes.

He's managed to surpass much of the roadblocks that have fallen in his way over the years. He's talented. He's sincere with his causes.

I am certainty going to miss him when he finally wanders out of the spotlight. I mean, who could possibly fill the role he has in our society?

No one. That's who.

I was reading a story last week, not sure where, but it was how he resonates with the younger generations. I keep reading how Canadians want him to run for some office and this effort to get him into politics is fueled by these younger kids.

For those of you on this site who are Canadians, just how 'famous' is he up there? I know he did the Olympic closing and all that, but is Shatner as much of an ICON up there as he is in the states?

i'm only 22, young for a TOS fan, and most of my friends think shatner is funny or entertaining, even those who dont follow star trek

I met a relative of his a couple of years ago, and I asked if she had ever spent time with 'The Shat,' to which she replied, "He has a big ego." I inquired further, & she said, "He's like, really funny, but, it's all about him."

I told her I envied her connection to him, I'd only ever seen him live at an event with him & Nimoy at Hofstra University in the late seventies/early eighties.

"Whatever" was her erudite last word on the subject.:guffaw:

What was the plane ride like?

Really nice. At first I pretended not to know it was him. Ten minutes in he broke the ice and asked if I knew who he was, and I said that I did but didn't want to invade his privacy. From there we talked about a bunch of stuff, most of it non-trek related. This was during BOSTON LEGAL's run, and I told him I thought Denny Crane was a very cool character. He said he liked the chance to do comedy..we talked about my family (kids..I showed him their pictures)...three hours of sitting next to him was fun. Turns out he was a Patriots fan, Im a Chargers fan. I was surprised how much he knew about the NFL...

Yes. That's what I'm thinking; what a shock that will be.

Well, I'll have to remember that if I ever get seated next to him. Talk about him. Right. Like there will be a problem doing that.

Up here in Canada there have even been newspaper articles asking people on their opinions regarding Shatner being appointed to Governor General. That would mean he would be the Queen's representative in this country. I gotta admit it would be kinda cool having Captain Kirk representing us. :techman:

Shatner is quite well known up here.

hmmm..which shatner would escort the queen? Kirk or Denny?

I don't think Shatner ever would retire unless his health demanded it. Nimoy has always been selective about his roles, the sort who could walk away from an acting gig or from all acting gigs, but Shatner's always been the type to take any job that came his way. I think he'll keep on going for as long as he possibly can.

I can't see Shatner ever truly retiring either. He just seems to enjoy what he does far too much to ever want to part with it. And he really seems to be enjoying what his career has become in the last, about, 15 years; he doesn't seem to take himself nearly as seriously. His self-parody in Airplane 2 was one thing; the Priceline Negotiator is something entirely different.

That said, it would sure be fun to have him as our Governor General!
