When did you become passionate about music?

Wow, I feel so young compared to all of you when you talk about when you got passionate about music (I'm 19)

I have to say, the first time I really got obsessed with a song was when I was 4 years old and this song came out:
Michael Jackson - Earth Song

When this song came on the music channels or the radio, nothing else could break my attention from it (and considering it was number 1 in my country for 5 weeks you can only imagine what that was like for my family XD)

I'm listening to it now and just remembering how much I used (and still do) love the song. It still remains one of my all-time favourite songs.


Of course a few years later when I got into Primary School and the Spice Girls got popular... well.... it was a heck of a lot of fun XD Yes, me and my friends were one of those groups of little girls that dressed up like the Spice Girls and tried to be them ^_^ Typical 90's little girl XD
Of course I was also somewhat different in that I love(d) the Spice Girls, and I also love(d) Guns'n'Roses... and that was because my parents played them to me all the time as a baby and I continued listening to them.

I think I first discovered an interest in music right after Freddie Mercury passed away.

I was about 15, I think. I heard he had died and I knew who he was, but had never really been interested in music. But a friend who adored Queen put on "Who Wants To Live Forever" in tribute to him.

I bought the "A Kind of Magic" album about a week later. Since then my tastes have changed somewhat, but occasianlly I'll put on some 'Classic Queen' or something, because no one could or still can belt it out like Freddie Mercury.

That's one thing I feel bad that I missed out on. A lot of music I listen to uses the radio to represent some sort of Bible or sorts where the truth of the universe is contained. But, sadly I came a little late to the game. I discovered most of the music I listen to through friends, teachers, relatives and the internet.

In a sense it was. But for people slightly (or not so slightly) older than me, the record store was a sort of "church." I vaguely remember it from my early childhood, but the record store where the record store guy was as much a celeb as a rock star or DJ, and the store as some sort of holy temple, is something I missed out on. It was really the experience of my older brothers. We all miss out on something I guess.

For me it was a store downtown near the College. The owner was a bit odd ( He liked to wear dresses) and the staff really knew their stuff. I'd walk in and they'd say "listen to this, I think you'll like it." It was part of my holy trinity of shopping: Comic shop, record shop and book shop. All with in walking distance of each other. Probably why I went to College there.

I only had an older sister, (who's musical taste ran towards Captain & Teneill) so it was radio, TV, friends and the record store staff to turned me on to new music.

Queen at Live Aid, that day.

This was a very good day to be or become a Queen fan. Queen OWNED Live Aid, like no band has ever owned an audience before. I'm not nearly as huge a Queen fan as you are (although I am a fan - they would make my top 10, anyway)...and I remember being utterly transfixed. Freddy Mercury was indeed King of The Universe on that day. No contest - the whole world was watching him...in complete awe. It was breathtaking. One of the top 2 or 3 moments in all of rock history.

Seriously - if anyone in this thread has not seen Queen's Live Aid performance, you owe it to yourself to watch it (can be found on YouTube - I even have the 3 main videos of this 20 minute set saved on my channel under 'perfect performances'). That performance at Live Aid was astounding, and essential viewing for any rock fan.

As for my response to the question - I come from a very musical family. We all played instruments, listened to music, etc. The first money I recall spending in my life was on a 45 to play on my kiddy record player - I think it was 3 Dog Night.
