When did Earth stop having armies or navies?

Just wondering when that happened, or if that even happened. In Enterprise Reed mentions family members, I think his father being in the Royal Navy so I was wondering what would things like ships and submarines look like in the 22nd century or even the 24th century? Would they even still have a use for them?

Could a 24th century submarine travel deeper?

I don't see why not. Even if only for education, science and pleasure.

The implication seems to be that aside from Starfleet, all of Earth's other militaries were disbanded when the Federation was founded.

As for submarines, yes I imagine they still exist, used by the Federation Naval Patrol Tom Paris talked about. They likely can go much deeper than modern day subs, and are presumably much roomier too.

Maybe they work on an enormous water planet, too. Oceans 50 miles deep (ours top out at about 7), covering the whole surface.

Could be they'd study that Ocean in the Delta Quadrant, but... oh yeah, Janeway made sure its residents DESTROYED IT! Thanks for that, Kathy. :angryrazz:

I would assume national navies etc. would have been disbanded when Earth got a global government, which would have been around 2150 at the latest (TNG: attached). Perhaps there are still United Earth forces. Especially since armies aren't just there for fighting, but also serve in some other capacities, e.g. to help with large scale logistic problems in sudden emergencies, and such.

When the Borg attack, there is a 'planetary defense' (even though it looks pathetic compared to both Starfleet and the Borg). I wonder whether that falls under Starfleet or just 'Earth'.

I always imagined that most of Earth's armies and navies do exist, but since Trek primarily focuses on Starfleet and affairs in space, there's often very little reason to mention them. I could see a case where Earth's armies and navies operate under a unified banner like the United Earth government, but they can be divided into their original "regional" units like the US, the UK, Japan, etc.

Assuming you're referring to what intercepted the Borg cube in the Sol system in TBOBW, that was actually the Mars Perimeter Defense. Which not only is it not particularly robust, but what happens if an enemy travels through the Sol system on a trajectory that doesn't take it anywhere near Mars?

For that matter, what happened to the Mars Perimeter Defense after the Synths destroyed Mars?

Defenses are tissue paper in Trek.

I can't imagine Picard's friend Louis, who works on the New Atlantis Project, not having the usage of submarine vessels to accomplish that feat

Apparently Reed had the option for the Royal Navy in the 2140s 50s .. And was expected to go except for his hydrophobia
So some form of waterborne navy does exist at that time. It may not be British by that time, some sort of UE navy. But with Earth at peace, standing army's of individual countries would just be a waste of money.
Maybe just ceremonial like the constitution.

If it's a United Earth Navy, why would they call it the Royal Navy. That name alone makes it British. Or at least belonging to a nation headed by a monarchy.

ARCHER: I understand you came from a long line of Royal Navy men. Your father, your grandfather. Why pick Starfleet? Why not continue the family tradition?

I'm not entirely sure you can conclude from this line that the Royal Navy still existed in Malcolm Reed's time (or that it merged in some United Earth navy). It apparently did in his father's and grandfather's time, though.

Some form of Navy must exist, since that line of dialogue states that Reed had the option to continue the naval family tradition and decided against it to join Starfleet.
