When did Discovery JUMP the Shark?

1. McCoy waxing poetic over a ship? Weird.

2. Kirk. Scotty. Even Sulu.

Huh. I forgot he waxes lyrical over the ship itself. I more remember the Data/Spock comparison.

In the context of talking about the D, I guess Scotty/Sulu would have made much more sense and they could have still done the Spock bit.

I suppose it felt important to get one of the ‘big three’ onboard and Kelley was the most willing/cheapest?

There’s not a chance in Hell that Shatner would have done it.

If memory serves me, DeForest Kelley agreed to do it at scale as a favor to Roddenberry.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy showed up in TNG when it made the most sense to. The higher up in the Big Three they go, the higher the stature of TNG at the time.

"Encounter at Farpoint" --> McCoy is there to pass the torch. Has a nice scene with Data, reminiscent of a scene he would've had with Spock, and then it's done. This is a brand-new series finding itself, so McCoy showing up and telling the audience "This is connected!" is all they needed. Anything more would be TOS overshadowing TNG.

"Unification" --> TNG has not only surpassed TOS in episode count, but also has a more-developed lore. It can stand toe-to-toe with TOS. So now, in this 25th Anniversary episode, Picard and Data meet Spock at a turning point in his life. We know enough about Picard that Spock can compare and contrast him to Kirk. We know enough about Data that he can contrast himself to Spock and note that Spock has abandoned what Data has sought all his life. TOS isn't overshadowing TNG. We're seeing how Spock fits into the TNG world. They also use this episode to give hints about what'll happen in the "past" in the next TOS Movie.

Generations --> Now it's time for the movie. Time for the Big Screen. Captain Picard meets Captain Kirk and they save the day together. The question of "Whatever happened to Captain Kirk?" is finally answered. Picard has to deal with tragedy, loss, and regret as his life is thrust into its next chapter. Up until this point, we had TOS Movies overlapping with TNG the TV Series. We had both Captains of the Enterprise. One on the Big Screen, one on the Small Screen. Kirk and Picard. After this, it's just Picard. The transition from one generation to the next is complete.

Are we still in the Discovery Forum?

I was thinking it must have been a case of:

a) who was available.

And maybe more importantly:

b) who was willing.

IIRC, several TOS cast members showed open and public hostility to the idea of TNG before it aired. I'm 90% certain that Doohan was one of those.

As we approach Discovery's final season and Cancellation, lets look back at where things went off track.

There may be a few fans who think Disco has always been super fantastic and never dipped.

However, this is for those who noticed that audience apathy for the show has reached it's peak. Especially amidst the cancellation. There doesn't seem to be much fan demand for future seasons.

It seemed there was some positivity for Season 2. Pike was universally praised and brought new life to the show. The storyline and writing made no sense, but audiences seemed charmed by Pike at least.

Then came Season 3. This is usually where Trek shows find their footing. I think this was the season that Broke Discovery.

Everything hinged on the Burn mystery. Even a lot of the braindead story decisions (like Ensign Tilly being made first officer) could have been waved away if The Burn payed off. It didn't.

The story of the crying superpowered Kelpien, crying for his mommy...causing the Burn was underwhelming at best, silly at worst. Even reviewers that defend Discovery like TrekCulture, admitted that this was lame.

After that, I noticed all the IMDB scores for Disco S4 episodes were consistently low;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5171438/episodes/?season=4&ref_=tt_eps_sn_4

Tending to fall in the 5/10 range. Still with thousands voting.

IMO S3 is where Discovery burned away it's audience goodwill.
A fella who's avatar is Picard and Crushers secret son complaining about jumping the shark :guffaw:
