They wouldn't have said anything at all if that were the case. Or they probably would have used some more neutral language.
I would love to imagine. More audience, less pandering to the fan base would actually make me more likely to watch something.

You do you. I'm pretty sure the creators of something saying "This is bad, don't watch it" is a pretty easy way to make me agree with them and not watch it.
I don't know? Train wrecks can be entertaining to watch. Which is the problem with Discovery, for me. It doesn't really illicit any emotional reaction, good or bad. It is just kinda there. At least with Picard, there is a silliness there to what is going on that makes it worth a watch. Even though the writing across the entirety of it is utter shit.
I'm sort of opposite there. Picard was fantastic. I watch Discovery, but it's generally been from the mindset of "this is terrible, but... it just HAS to get better? Right? RIGHT?" and... it did, a bit.
This is the great thing about this place.
I like Picard Seasons 1 and 3 better than every season of Discovery, but I like every season of Discovery better than Picard Season 2. So, they kind-of sort-of cancel each other out.
On the surface, it might look like I'd have a slight preference for Picard but there's ANOTHER wrinkle. You could watch Discovery in isolation from the rest of Star Trek and 99% of the time you'd be fine. Anything and everything from other Star Trek series is usually explained in Discovery so you don't have to watch them. You can watch Discovery and that's it. The 30 episodes of Picard effectively make it TNG Season 8, released in three different batches. Batches that are different from each other, but batches nonetheless. If you haven't seen TNG (and a good sampling of VOY), there's no context for the series to work. Yet Picard works for me because you can only have the stories it has by building on top of the foundation that's already there, and it feels like you're being rewarded for your commitment. So, again, those two things cancel each other out.
I look for and get different things out of both series.

Something can jump the shark and still be successful. The two are not mutually exclusive.

They sure are. For example, I did not like Picard 3. I stated my feelings about it at the time. Other's thought it was the best Trek ever made. After it was over I was pretty much done with it. Haven't watched it again and won't. But I also haven't gone to that specific forum to remind people who like it that I thought it was fan-indulgent, old-farts-in-leather nonsense.
It seems appropriate these two posts are next to each other, what with the leather jackets and all that.
True, but it's going to put you at a disadvantage to comment on episodes you haven't watched, assuming you're not watching any Season 5. I'm not sure what you'd get out of that.Star Trek is Star Trek.
Unless you've written off the rest of Season 3 and are skipping Season 4. Which you could do but seems strange.
