What's Your Name?

Oh, I wasn't necessarily asking you, but Laura. Well, your pronunciation of Michael was more or less correct, with the exception of the ch sound. The ch in Michael isn't the same as in Schumacher or Bach. Maybe the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will help: 'miçaɛl = Michael and baχ = Bach.
Oh, interesting! I didn't know that. I was told that ch in German was always pronounced like in Bach. Not that it would make any difference, because probably I couldn't tell the difference or pronounce them correctly. :(

By the way, name's Pier. Think French's Pierre, but less froufrou. :p
Less froufrou ? It's supposed to mean what ?
Nothing, Caroline, chérie. Just myself being silly. ;)

But the way Pier is pronounced in Italian is a bit different, the "e" is shorter (like in "bed") and the "r" is the trilled Italian one, not the softer French version. So, less froufrou. :p

It's like the Italian pronunciation, but without the r being rolled like in Italian (although I wouldn't mind that ;)).

People can read love poetry of Petrarch to you, so that's a plus.

I was actually named after those poems.

Not too bad. But it's actually more like Me-chu-ail. The ch like in choose, the u like in nut and the ail like in tail.
Or maybe not... :wtf: That's not how the ch is supposed to be pronounced in German. You crazy non-existing Bielefeldians!
 Grrr! First of all, I'm no frickin' Bielefeldian! If I remember correctly, you and I were actually from the same neck of the woods, remember?

Are we? You're from Berlin? But don't you live in Bielefeld? Sorry if I've confused you with soemone else.

Also, how is ch supposed to be pronounced in German, then? How do you say mich, Licht, Dächer, Zeche or Becher?

Well, certainly not like the ch in choose. ;)

Nope, that's most certainly not it! And that's not how Michael Schumacher is pronounced. You don't know many Michaels, do you? :p

I know a lot of them. The ch-sound in Bach is pretty close, at least much closer than the ch in choose. And I doubt many non-German speakers can tell the difference.

It's nothing compared to my surname, though, which is unpronounceable in 190 languages at least.
Hm, now you made me really curious.

 Alright, I'm not so easy to track down since it's not that rare a name here. It's Nitzschke.

Yes, I do live in Bielefeld. I even like Bielefeld. But I come from Frankfurt/Oder, not far from where you live. ;)

Okay, maybe not like the ch sound in choose. I was just looking for an easy to understand comparison. But I still don't see how you can think the ch in Bach is the same as in Michael when they really aren't. Das wurmt mich jetzt echt! ;) And because I want to clear up that confusion I just recorded a little comparison. Please have a listen. And yes, that is my voice. :shifty:

And since I'm absolutely unable to pronounce an Italian "r" you will be a Pierre with a weird spelling and a lot of froufrou ;)

I vaguely recalled you were originally from Brandenburg but I wasn't sure anymore and didn't want to say something wrong. Anyway, the 'non-existing Bielefeldians' part was just meant as a friendly jab.

You have a more low-pitched voice than I would have thought. :)
I know it's not the same sound and I never said it was. But I believe that most people unfamiliar with German wouldn't hear a difference.

Yep, like that. :) (I personally like to emphasise the z a little more because otherwise it often is omitted when people write it down.)

Mine is Steph. I actually dislike it, I wish I had a more 'interesting' name (There are 4 other girls with my name in one class)

It's funny which names turn up more than once in a class. I would never have thought "Jayden" was that popular a name for a girl (since I'd never even heard of it before meeting one girl in little miss trampledamage's pre-school) - now in her kindergarten class there are two of them, and there's only 10 girls!

My name's Alicia, who would have guessed? :)

I've known quite a few other Alicia's throughout my life. Some pronounced different (I say my name A-lee-sha), some spelled different. There's one in my law school section as well.

My family sometime calls me Al (not really fond of that nickname, but what are you gonna do?) and AB (not even related to my middle initial, sadly). I usually just go by my full name, not like it is particularly long or difficult to pronounce.
