What's Your Name?

Serious answer:

John-Anthony

Yep, got a hyphen in there to make it all a first name and no middle name. What can I say? My mom's quirky like that.

Way too many nicknames to mention.

That, and I get both amused by and tired of people thinking I'm Mexican. :p
For the record, Juan Bolio the folk hero, while he did become the Emperor of Mexico, did not originate there. Most folklorists agree he is from Nicaragua, but some believe he was Bolivian or possibly Peruvian but immigrated to Nicaragua at a young age.

Not too bad. But it's actually more like Me-chu-ail. The ch like in choose, the u like in nut and the ail like in tail.
Or maybe not... :wtf: That's not how the ch is supposed to be pronounced in German. You crazy non-existing Bielefeldians!
 Grrr! First of all, I'm no frickin' Bielefeldian! If I remember correctly, you and I were actually from the same neck of the woods, remember? Also, how is ch supposed to be pronounced in German, then? How do you say mich, Licht, Dächer, Zeche or Becher?

Like Schumacher's? I've heard it pronounced Mee-chaa-el, with the "ch" aspirated like in "Bach" and the last vowel between "e" and "ee".
Yep. That's it.
Nope, that's most certainly not it! And that's not how Michael Schumacher is pronounced. You don't know many Michaels, do you? :p

I'm Laura by the way (pronounced like the perfume ;)).
Laura is a beautiful name. One of the first girls I have ever been attracted to as a child was named Laura. And I sure how to pronounce it. :p

It's nothing compared to my surname, though, which is unpronounceable in 190 languages at least.
Hm, now you made me really curious.

 No, personally no. I was just reporting how I've heard it pronounced on TV by F1 people. Or my memory is faulty (very possible), or they just didn't know themselves (even more possible).

Oh, I wasn't necessarily asking you, but Laura. Well, your pronunciation of Michael was more or less correct, with the exception of the ch sound. The ch in Michael isn't the same as in Schumacher or Bach. Maybe the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will help: 'miçaɛl = Michael and baχ = Bach.

Deutsche Sprache – schwere Sprache. :(

IPA is useless unless you have a comparable sound in other languages. I was told that the ch is German (for words like ich) was pronounced like the h at the beginning of English words. I've heard other people pronounce it like an sh sound. But I took a little bit of German over four years ago, so I don't really remember.

I just want to say I love everyone's names here and it's nice getting to know each of you just that much better. :)

Now where do I remember that old story from...?

My name is Maarten. Try and pronounce it correctly, I dare ya:devil:

That's not difficult for a Dutch-speaker. ;)

Yep, indeed it is, but having lived in New Zealand the last 13 years I've gotten used to people not being able to pronounce my name correctly, I can't even begin to count the number of times I've been called Maarteen or even Matt :wtf: - I blame my crazy Dutch/Kiwi accent on that one, and the Kiwi accent is usually quite lazy so people stop listening after the hard 't' :(.

For all the non-Dutch speakers on the board, it's pronounced almost the same as the English Martin btw

I'm Michael. (But I guess there's no-one here who'd pronounce it correctly. :D)

Do you want it pronounced correctly in Dutch, French, English or German? ;)

I'm Sven. Which is not pronounced "Zven".
Quite a Scandinavian name you have there! Btw, NCC-1701, spooky we almost have the same username, not often you'd find a Dutchman admitting he's similar to a German

My name is Joel. I tend to go by Joe. Though this nice neighbor of ours down the street calls me Joseph. Was never mean enough to correct her and I do go by Joseph sometimes.

But yeah I was forced to go by Joe because no one in Texas or Philadelphia can say Joel correctly.

They call me, Joe - Well (think of it as Noel) instead of Jole (rhymes with hole).

My real real name is Soon. *shrugs* Go figure.

If you were in Britain, I can confidently say you'd be known as John-Ayy! because we'd think it was funny.

Yeah, I know. :(

On TV here, they just say 'Michael' (British pronunciation). Don't go confusing our pub going population with no foreign talk
