Whats the deal with Klingon faces?

I dont understand. in DS9 and TNG they look like proper Klingons.

I just just just started ENT S1. im 10 mins into it and the Klingons are... like the TNG and DS9 Klingons. ENT is set in 2150+ TNG and DS9 are 2360+

TOS is 2250+? i think. what happened to them? klingons where once big, strong and had huge foreheads. then they looked like regular men with mustaches... then back to big and strong.

In a DS9 Episode where they spliced DS9 with TOS, worf knows why, but never explains the Klingon apparency change. anyone have ideas on how to make a cannon loop-hole? :klingon:

The cannon loop-hole was my specialty when I worked at the circus.

If not for Worf's comment it is possible the change in the look of the Klingons might have been ignored and left purely as a real-world issue. If you want spoilers on why you can go and read the MA article on the Klingons and it explains it or just wait it out until you get there.

They "do not discuss it with outsiders." But I'm sure if you give a Klingon a few flagons of bloodwine, his lips will loosen!

It's called budget and technology! And concept development, I think. They simply hadn't developed the Klingons as a honor driven warrior society yet in TOS.

The other option would have been having Worf suddenly look like a TOS Klingon the moment they went to the past and nobody noticing or commenting on it. ;)

Oh dear. That would have been really stupid. :cardie::rommie: It's never a good idea to completely destroy the suspension of disbelief.

And they didn’t have the materials and techniques to make the lightweight prosthetic facial appliances that came along a decade or two later. Basically the TOS Klingons were conceived as the Mongol hordes in space. The swarthy greasepaint, fake beards and cheesy uniforms would have looked ridiculous on the big screen, so the Klingons got a complete makeover for ST:TMP.

^I'd love to see Worf's reaction to his face-change, too. Would he try to hide it like his pimple in Insurrection, or would he beam with cultural pride? Truly, the Best of Both Worfs! (or is that Worves?)

It wouldn't be as funny if they all noticed it (assuming they'd done that, I mean). Every character should just continue as if nothing was wrong, including Worf.

Actually, I would have loved that! :techman:

The writers might have played with it -- Odo looks at Worf when they beam over, says he has curious look on his face. Worf explains he is anxious about seeing his people in this more glorious epoch of their history. The viewers would've rolled with laughter at the bait-and-switch.

Since the Rura Penthe scene in Trek XI was cut, I think XII should have Klingons without ridges (without explanation), just to mess with us fans.

If we get to see Klingons in ST 2012, I would prefer ridges. But I wouldn't be opposed to an update of the make-up effect to make it look more realistic. Not only the ridges themselves but the appliances to the face and the teeth. Make everything look a little less like rubber.

My impression with those cut scenes is that...
they were wearing the lasks to cover the shame of losing their ridges.
