What's so great about the TMP refit?

I've just gotta say that picture of the 2009 Enterprise is horrible. That's a really inaccurate pic that I think was done from someone watching the trailer or something. There are far more accurate views to be found online.

(Also it's also not to scale with the other two Enterprises :vulcan:)

Well excuse the hell out of me, chill will ya?

I just posted it to show their general designs compared to one another, I wasn't going to go out and make sure I found proper 1:50 scale blue prints of each of them and make sure they've got their little cirtificational rubber stamps of cannon approval.... but now that I know that those are required, I'll make sure I supply the proper information.... ye All Things Star Trek Highness *bows and curtsy* ;) (Just messin with ya by the way.)

I was actually unaware (or I did know at one point and then just forgot) that it's such a favorite. I suppose that makes sense.

1:50 scale would make a plan or elevation of the TOS Enterprise about 19 feet long. Hope you've got a large-format printer.

(Just messin' with you too.) :p

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I haven't met an Enterprise I haven't liked...well, no, that's a lie, because I suddenly remembered the "Enterprise-J." Never mind.

I agree with you on all counts. I have my favorites, but they've all looked pretty good. And yes, I can do without the Enterprise-J.

Because that nuEnterprise pic is so horrible I feel obliged to post a link to this:

Haters can hate all they want: That ship is lovely :techman:.

A) People who dislike something aren't all haters.

B) Had I never seen the original, I would like JJ's better. I tried looking at it as if this were the first incarnation of Trek. It's pretty. My beef with it is not original -- it is on steroids like everything else in our culture; so not only does it look ungainly compared to the thinner (hence, more "elegant") originals; it stirs up some emotional stuff with me b/c everything being on steroids (e.g. the new cathedral called a Taco Bell we just got on the site of the old one that was decent) is a pet peeve of mine.

But -- and they will take away my 1964-1979 membership card for this -- had JJ's been the first Trek ENT, I'd think it was great. As it is, I can appreciate it has some lines.

Still not a big fan of the D, but I think we're all in agreement that the Ent-J is a pretty horrifying piece of shit, isn't it?

I actually like the J. For the amount of screen-time it got, it worked fine: a version of the Enterprise that looks strange enough to be 200 years past what we've seen, but still has the saucer/nacelles.

I too enjoyed the J, a truly interesting design that needs to be seen more and blueprinted in detail (including full deck plans).

Having seen the proper pics on Drexler's blog, I actually kinda like it. I don't care for the nacelles, though - I think the wing-like aft section alone would do as a mysterious future drive system, not unlike Stargate Universe's Destiny. I do not like that rejected "Congo" Ent-J design at all. I was never a fan of the Enterprise-D either, despite growing up with it. Voyager had terrible little atrophied nacelles and DS9's Defiant didn't look like a Star Trek ship at all.

You haven't seen a truly ugly Enterprise until you've seen the "Hammerhead" one from the aborted Final Frontier cartoon (sadly my phone doesn't "do" links, sorry, but there's a website with art somewhere)

And I didn't mean any offence, plynch. You're totally right. The majority of those who dislike a movie don't make a big deal about it.

Meh - I guess I just don't like the "far-flung future" design ships from the Trek-verse. Goes right back to why I still think the design of the refit/A is the best. They just look too... out there for lack of a better way of wording it. They're missing that functional aesthetic in my opinion.

No idea what the "Congo" J design is, but I'll try to look that up. I think I've seen that Hammerhead design, but I may be thinking of some of McQuarrie's Phase II (or was it TMP?) designs. Pretty horrid stuff.

Right there with you on the D and Voyager, but I actually dug the Defiant for it's non-standard look and butt ugly toughness. Always brought to mind the A-10 Warthogs to me. Ugly, but it kicks 10 tons of shit.

What's a "Hater?"

It's ghetto-speak from the early 1990s, employed primarily by those who could not defend their positions.
Actually, it's used towards those that could not defend their positions (i.e., someone who hates something just for the sake of hating it or simply because other people like it).

No, by -- people who assert or promote something and are unable to defend it, so they simply label those who question them "haters".

Nope. "A hater" is just someone who hates something, usually without just cause or simply out of jealousy.

Don't be a hater of people who use the word hater...

I don't believe there's anything in canon to suggest where the prime 1701 was built, beyond "San Fran shipyards". If that was on the ground or in a space is left unsaid. All we know was that final preperations for launch were in orbit.

Hell, if you step outside the canon, old novels had the 1701's saucer section refitted on the ground.
GR's notes in TMoST refer to components built on the ground and assembled in space much like is done with the ISS. The only reason ST09 has it all on the ground is they thought it would be a kewl shot.

My favourite design will always remain the original TOS version, but the TMP refit is a close second because it takes the concept and adds an extra layer of realism to it. No other design in Trek has even come close to these two with the exception of DS9's Defiant.
