Whatever Happened to Diane Carey?

^ Actually, a lot of the early books in DS9 and Voyager came before the authors had been able to see the series. THey just had to have their best shot from the series' bible and a few photos.

^ Station Rage wasn't really that "early." It was #13 in the DS9 numbering sequence, and was published in fall 1995, which means it was written in late 1994, which means she had two seasons' worth of show to work with. (Heck, I was there when Greg Cox and John Gregory Betancourt were writing Devil in the Sky -- John was my boss at the time -- and that book was #11, and they had plenty of onscreen material to work with, so Diane had to have also.)

After reading Red Sector, count me as one of the WTF? crowd. Basing a story on an original guest star is not bad in and of itself, but the guest star has to be compelling or appealing, and Stiles is anything but. Beverly, the TNG crew, and the biological threat get relegated to a subplot, which is inexcusable as part of a miniseries that bears the TNG name. I like Spock and McCoy, but they are only there to spout platitudes and be objects of hero worship. That will be the last non-TOS Carey story I read.

Off topic a little, didn't an author say in Voyages of Imagination that the DS9 Bible was far superior to Voyager's?

Staying OT, I haven't read any of the series' bibles (side note: if they're available online, I'd love to sneak a peek :D ), but I think Voyager had more potential than DS9 (and I'm a Niner through and through, mind you).

The basic premise of Voyager , as well as the setup, could have made it THE best Star Trek series. Sadly that potential was (IMO) never realized...

... but I would like to know who that author was :)

VOY's bible actually stated that "The Doctor" would select the name "Doc Zimmerman" for himself in an early episode, catching several novelists off-guard.

And now I don't know who to be more angry at. You, for (possibly) thinking I am a Nazi sympathizer (I'm not)

I wasn't (and I said I knew you weren't) saying that. I was just amused by the novelty of the suggestion that someone might.

Novelty? Not like it hasn't happened before.

I remember that! I was really surprised at the time when it never happened...

i believe i read somewhere the people who wrote the DS9 guide had tons of access to staff, crew, etc while the people who wrote the voyager book got press releases, scripts and publicity shots or something like that and didn't get to talk to the people involved. thus the difference in the quality of the books.

^^Err, different topic. The posts above were referring to the series bibles, the behind-the-scenes primers for freelance writers and directors working on (or seeking to work on) the shows. What you're talking about are the companion books published by Pocket for the general public.

On both DS9 and VOYAGER, I had to plot the books from the bibles alone, but was able to view some episodes by the time I actually wrote the books. And, yep, the DS9 bible was more comprehensive (and accurate) than the original VOYAGER bible, which was a bit on the skimpy side.

According to the VOYAGER bible, as I recall, Tuvok was a much older man who acted as a mentor to B'Elanna. We all remember that, right?

The tricky part about plotting a book based on a series bible is that you can't really tell from the bible whom the breakout characters are going to be. Once I actually saw the shows, I found myself wishing that I had given Quark and the EMH more to do!

^^Well, the original TNG bible said that Riker was called "Bill," Data was built by mysterious aliens (and his name rhymed with "that-a"), and Geordi was the liaison with the ship's children. And Worf wasn't even in it.

Which then became that only Troi called him Bill in later drafts, which Carey used in Ghost Ship saying that it was similar to the Betazoid word for, iirc, shaving cream and that she called him that because it reminded her of father. There was something about Bill also smelling similar to her father's brand of shaving cream, but I'm not sure.

Troi did call Riker "Bill" in "The Naked Time" and never called him that again after that episode.

Yep, I watched "Haven" again a few months ago and Troi definitely calls him "Bill" in that one.

^Right, on the holdeck. I forgot about that. Yeah, it was dropped pretty quickly though. It would've been nice had they just kept the nickname Bill between her and Riker and no one else.

I could be mixing this up but doesn't Ship of the line have a really glaring continuity error in that DC seems to think that 'Chain of Command' occurred before 'Best of Both Worlds' ?

Sorry to get off topic again, but I just thought I'd let you guys know that Roddenberry.com actually some of the writers bibles for TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY. I just looked again, and they even have one for Phase II.

thanks JD :)
Unfortunately, the website contains writers' bibles for sale :censored:

... now if only one could download them free of charge...
