What

Isn't it time we just let the franchise die? It had its run, you can't really stretch it forever (IMO).

Have we stopped retelling fairytales, like "The Three Little Pigs", fables like "The Hare and the Tortoise", Shakespearean plays, "Zorro", "Tarzan", "Sherlock Holmes", "Superman", "Batman", "Spiderman", "James Bond 007"?

Why should "Star Trek" die? It's modern mythology.

I don't want it to die. I just don't want it to mutate into something way different and call itself Star Trek. An analogy would be if you took Superman and made him all gritty and dark. Or told a story with three pigs in it that had nothing to do with preparedness and planning ahead. I'd love to see some real Star Trekkish Trek come back on. animated is the most cost effective way. Experts on this board say it's not gonna happen. OK, then. I'll watch my old dvd's. Be well.

So you don't want to see Elvis in the captain's chair?

nobody is writing new "Shakespearean" plays.

Then you haven't seen 1956's "Forbidden Planet" ("The Tempest") or TOS's "Elaan of Troyius" ("The Taming of the Shrew").

Or:
A Double Life (1947) Othello
A Thousand Acres (1997) King Lear
All Night Long (1962) Othello
Catch My Soul (1974) Othello
King of Texas (2002) King Lear
Kiss Me Kate (1948) The Taming of the Shrew
Let the Devil Wear Black (1999) Hamlet
Men of Respect (1991) Macbeth
My Own Private Idaho (1991) Henry IV and Henry V
Ran (1985) King Lear
Romeo Must Die (2000) Romeo and Juliet
Scotland, PA (2001) Macbeth
She’s the Man (2006) Twelfth Night
Strange Brew (1983) Hamlet
The Boys from Syracuse (1940) Comedy of Errors
Tower of London (1939) Richard III
Were the World Mine (2008) A Midsummer’s Night Dream
West Side Story (1961) Romeo and Juliet
Yellow Sky (1943) The Tempest.

I have never written a fanfic, but I have one in my head. For, like 25 years. Involving Elvis. '70s Elvis. Maybe someday.

^'Elvis isn't dead, kid. He just went home." -Agent K, MIB

While I don't expect anything for a while, I wouldn't be surprised if there have been some 'informal' chats hinting that maybe after the next movie comes out it may be a good idea to start thinking about starting to think about what might be able to happen if someone maybe came up with an idea that might be worth thinking about. In a round about way.
Thanks, every bit as precise as the thread title!
A better question is... should there be one?...

As long as there are profits to be made, Star Trek will live... in one form or another. Will it be the Star Trek defined by your mind? Maybe not, but it will live as long as the owners of the Star Trek property are willing to keep investing.:vulcan:
