What would your TNG movie be like?

Ok....my TNG movie would go something like this:

Captain Riker and the USS Titan is sent on a mission to find out what happened to the missing USS Enterprise which had been on an top-secret mission in (insert location/dimension here.) The mission was so top secret that Riker isn't given any details as to what Picard was up to, only a general location.

The movie would flash back and forth, from several months prior showing Picard & the Enterprise on their mission and then would flash forward to Riker looking for clues to the Enterprise's mission and what happened to it.

At the end, Riker finds the Enterprise, destroyed (doing something heroically) and manages to retrieve Picard's body and return home.

While I like your idea of doing the flashbacks to add to the mystery, that ending would be really, really dark. Especially if, as indicated, it would be the last TNG film.

Well, we've seen Kirk's death, it's only fair that we see Picard's final mission. It would have a great emotional impact as opposed to a happy ending.

Doesn't have to be the end of TNG, we still have Riker and the Titan.

True...but that'd be like doing TOS without Kirk.

Huge crazy space/time distortions tear through every part of the known and unknown galaxy. Starfleet discovers the epicenter to be close enough to the Titan to investigate. Riker eventually discovers an energy "cocoon".

Riker's away team beams in and they find Q. We learn that he is hiding from the physical embodiment of the galaxy itself. Every galaxy could be classified as a being, where the planets and life forms are the cells that make up the organism, but at the same time, it is not alive or an organism like we can conceive. The Q have always been in tune with this being, even though it is much more powerful than the continuum, doing nothing but existing. But the galaxy has never known death, only existence, and, finally, wanting to experience something new, decides to end its own life, just to see what will happen. The Q, of course, tried to “reason” with it, as much as one can reason with a non-being, but to no avail. And, since this galaxy was in tune with every living being, and knew every thought of every creature and could control the fate of every being, Q had to hide. The split second he starting to come up with a plan was the second he created his pocket of non-space and non-time, using most of his powers to hide his thoughts and himself from the galaxy. And now he needs Picard. The Q knew a moment like this could eventually happen, but they didn’t think it ever would, and not so soon. But since the Q, except for this moment, are forever, they, like the galaxy, have never had instinct for survival. Even when Q was turned into a human, his instinct for survival wasn’t strong. Real humans have that, but, more importantly than that, Q is calling on an old favour of Picard’s.

Wacky adventures ensue, Picard and the Enterprise eventually get there, Q and Picard merge, and the new being latches onto the "consciousness" of the galaxy, Picard giving up his own life so that the galaxy would now have the survival instinct of humanity.

Yup, this would probably be impossible to get across in a film. And might not even really make sense.

But to me, at least it pretends to be epic. :p

Instead of GEN, I would've took MJF's book Crossover and made that into TNG's first film, which would've been a better way to pass the torch and not kill off Kirk.

First Contact would follow. Then I would've made the Dominion War novel, Behind Enemy Lines (I think that was the title) or either The Battle of Betazed into the third movie.

Peter David's Q Squared would've served as the basis for the fourth movie. Then I would do a TUC style film that forged peace between the Romulans and the Federation as TNG's swansong film.

You have chosen two of my favorite novels that I, too, believe would make excellent films: Crossover and Q-Squared. Still I would've preferred it if TNG had stayed on the small screen by way of semi-annual miniseries. I believe it could return to TV on cable.

William Campbell probably would have been too old to play Trelane at that point. Who would you have liked to seen in the role?

TNG was and is my bread and butter when it comes to Trek past and present. 14 years ago (!) when they cancelled it, I was disappointed to say the least but full of youthful optimisum that a movie was on the way.

Yay! TNG on the silver screen! But they had to resort to the TOS crew to hold half the movie cuz the studio wasnt confident enough in TNGs fanbase. Plus the destroyed the Enterprise

Then FC came out; the best of all the Trek movies to date. The simple story of a vicious enemy hell bent on destroying humanity at any cost stopped by the man hell bent on revenge. Action story, and plenty for all the cast characters to do.

INS and NEM. What can I say about these two pieces of rotting crap? A movie about a morally ambiguous plot with aliens nobody cares about. And another written by fanwankers with plot holes big enough to fit the Exxon Valdez through. This is also where they turned the franchise into the Picard and Data show.

My favourite show of all time got the shaft when it came to the movie treatment. So I got thinking, what would make a great TNG movie. One of the first things that came to mind was the episode "Conspiracy". I thought that had this been a movie script stretched out and involving more governments, characters, etc... there would be at least one more TNG movie worth watching over and over again.

What about you fellow Trekkers? Any ideas? And yes I know that Trek 11 is coming out, I just want pure TNG answers for this one.

Well years ago I wrote a synopsis, my only fan fic type story ever. I used the Chase as the basis/retelling of it, I felt it was a broad enough concept to make for an epic and still explore some themes that made ST great...peace instead of war in our galaxy. That a lot of us are the same despite physical differences. I prob should re-read and re-write it, but here I am posting it without looking at it first. It used to make the rounds quite a bit in the old days, but I haven't posted it recently.

STX Story Synopsis
Teaser:

A tremendous green flash...slowly fading to a searing white afterglow, then fades into nothingness. A starship of obvious, mammoth proportion lumbers past, lingering for seconds as it seems to float by, revealing the architecture of beings that created works of tremendous baroque detail, having apparently shed the need for pure engineering on a mechanistic level, and now create technology as art. A sense of power emanates from the ship as it exits from some sort of warp. It slowly settles over a planet with a trinary star system. Shadowy forms beam down on the surface. Hovering anti-grav equipment gently hums as they scan the area...a pullback reveals a simmering hot, primal planet, with pools of viscous fluid gurgling along their path. A galactic arm burns brightly in the sky overhead, demonstrating proximity to the concentration of stars in the ebony night. Then a another bright flash, the aliens release something into the pools. A closeup shows no evidence of anything in the liquid, then suddenly, glowing tendrils shoot in every direction, forming a web of organic intricacy. The mysterious forms vanish in a familiar pulse of light, knowing they need apply no more prodding to the species to develop. The nanoforms introduced here will anchor and coordinate the planetwide introduction of complex DNA sequences, and eventually will degrade, leaving no evidence. The ship appears again in orbit, multiple barrages of streaks head for the atmosphere. The seeding is done, and the true size of the ship is revealed as it eclipses the sun form Earth's orbital vantage point, heading out into deepest space..

A noticably irritated Captain Picard--uniform not yet magnetically zippered--is rushing onto the bridge, itself a scene of chaos as officers of the main bridge crew arrive, and the night duty shift leaves in haste from the opposite turbolift doors. The Enterprise-E has received a Priority 1 communication, suggesting an extreme emergency, if not disaster, and the nightwatch is quickly relieved. Picard was having his first good night sleep in some time, as the Romulans have been posturing on Federation borders after the Dominion conflict. Riker and Troi pull around their seats and sit, shooting over a concerned glance in Picard's direction, Worf mumbles something about a sonic shower malfunction after his recent transfer from ambassador duties on the Klingon homeworld as the viewscreen comes to life. Picard is already greeting Admiral K'vh'hreet--the polite abbreviation of the Saurian's full name. A serious emergency has flared at the outer fringes of Federation territory, near treaty exploration space that is devoid of any known empire. Picard wonders why, that area has seen no trouble in centuries, before or after the UFP came into existence. Nevetheless, the admiral assures him there is danger, and to expect a briefing in person once he gets there. Picard asks Data for any relevant information. It turns out records of the entire area's history are sketchy, yet there is a mention of Iconian worlds and other distant empires. Picard protests these were far too long ago in history to shed any light on the subject, and most alien species have lived and traded peaceably for a long time. Data continues on: Several sectors of that space have uncovered archaelogical digs that link several major planets together by artifacts found in remote areas. At that, Picard smiles, knowing there is always a good mystery to be solved when ancient cultures are involved. Resolving that there can be little more to be gained immediately by examining the depths of history and dusty isolinear computer files, Picard orders a change in course.

One of the few planets of note in the area is a major Yridian colony, Mystere IV. An ordinary world but with an ambassadorial base set up specifically to handle processing of newly discovered worlds at the boundary of treaty space. Picard is surpised to see a dozen starship of various types docked, and others orbitting further out..some battle scarred. Picard, Data, Riker, Worf and Troi head out to meet an ambassador at the stated place. All are surprised to see a Yridian and his aide as they enter the door. Yridians are traders, and many are noted for dirty dealings, especially with the Orion Syndicate. Troi cannot read them well but notes an obvious sense of dread on the part of the aides, but cannot determine the exact nature of those feelings. The Yridian seals the door and turns on sensor baffles. Picard asks about the need for such extreme secrecy. The Yridian introduces himself as Sedra, and explains that one of the recent artifacts discovered by a multi-species crew has demonstrated an awesome power..and includes objects of microscopic nature--advanced nanotechnology--yet it existed in the strata of a world aged at no less than 9 billion years old. At this the E-E crew is taken aback. Picard has never heard of alien species that old, not the Guardian of Forever nor anyone, and Data confirms this. He goes on to speculate that the equipment was left by a race of unimaginable complexity, yet not infallible, as this artifact was clearly not meant to ever be discovered...evidence of scarring from a failed attempt at disintegration exists in the machine. Data asks if the purpose of the machine has been determined. At this, the ambassador solemnly intones that it is an electro-chemical probe, designed to manipulate genetic information and a basic molecular level. What's worse, he has come into possession of certain secret UFP files of the E-D's investigation into Professor Richard Galen's work across 19 worlds and the involement of various species to recover data that links all those humanoid species. Picard flashes a knowing frown at his crew, recalling the Yridian destroyer during his investigation and the aftermath of Starfleet debriefings. The data was to be released but as of yet, Starfleet remains tight lipped about the incident. Perhaps the Yridians knew more than to the pieces to the puzzle than they thought. Suddenly the ambassador angrily accusses the Federation of withholding information that could change the face galaxy, especially the local unallied sectors. Picard asks why he is so interested. "Because, you fool," exclaims the Yridian, "the new archeaological information we have suggests a far greater pattern, not only are all humanoids linked, but also all other sub-species of sentients: avians, reptilians, insectoids....EVERYONE! What was the progenitors purpose, was it all benevolent as claimed?" This has thrown all sectors into an understandable upheaval as knowledge of this occurence grew, but to top all this off, a SECOND linked artifact was discovered..a sort of gigantic ark ship that may have carried samples of all these worlds as a follow up. It is much younger by perhaps a few billion years....and it was stolen off of Vederi IX. "My planet is accused of salvaging it and towing it offworld to study it to gain advantage over all the local sectors. Aboard the ark were artifacts of some early species, some of which are considered sacred. Origin of species is a very sensitive subject for many worlds and any sudden change can lead to outrage. We have been attacked, manipulated and vilified. All destroyers and cruisers are on alert, and our defenses consolidating. But we can't hold the others off forever. We appeal to help from the Federation, we need to prove who the real culprits were and to calm tensions. Soon, this could spread to all of the neighboring sectors, even the Federation and Klingons could be affected. You will be affected to, we are all in this together captain." The Yridians leave the protected room for their quarters, leaving the implications of the situation floating heavily in the room.

Picard turns on the comm as the others gather around him, and it is the reptilian Admiral again. "Picard my old friend, needless to say we feel somewhat responsible for this situation, and we want to help. Our efforts to ease the galaxy into a new mode of thinking based on your startling discoveries at Vilmor II seem to have come to naught. The Enterprise is at the ambassador's disposal, and delegates from three dozen worlds will be going with you to assure all interests are represented, as they have the greatest immediate stake in this. Picard protests, letting the admiral know of his qualms in not revealing the information sooner. He had hoped to avoid any unpleasantness between neighboring systems. The admiral cannot say more, the deed is done and the situation must be dealt with. "I'm sending a science vessel along with you, the "Feynman". We want you to find the ark ship and return all these artifacts, and most of all, what are the secrets these vessels hold about our origins and future.." Picard cannot refuse this, they leave for the Enterprise.

The specter of Dr Galen haunts Picard even now. He handles the Kurlan Naiskos...another artifact of an earlier time. He tells Riker how it reminds him of how he felt he failed the Dr the first time and the great discoveries of the first escapade to Vilmor II that seemingly put the situation to rest in his mind. His archaeloigcal senses were rarely at a sharper peak (except perhaps with the Darsay Archive which attmepted to manipulate matter on the Enterpsie into a facsimile of the anceint culture). But now the situation again turns to conflict, to war, bloodshed. How he wishes the shared origin of life and the staggering possibilites of the new discoveries would put an end to all the suffering. Riker tries to comfort his captain, but eventually his captain's thoughts turn to action.

Picard oversees the loading of scientific equipment and embarking of personnel and ambassadors. He watches the myriad lifeforms board: a Draxaran; menacing Fakai warriors...who are aware of Fakai religious artifacts from the dawn of their civilization, and they are in no mood to talk; Skoorians; Satarrans; others, and of course, the Yridian ambassador, accompanied by at least a dozen guards and Starfleet security men..a total of 112 passengers. Just then the ship is rocked with all the power of full disruptor beams and the tell-tale after-vibrations. Red alert klaxons sound and Picard rushes to the bridge. It seems a wrench has been thrown into the works. The Gorn, unallied but always touchy have learned of the mission and have fired on the station and Enterprise. Only automatic shields enabled them to resist heavy damage. Clearly the Gorn intentions were not to destroy or they could have done so. The captain of the battlecruiser appears on screen, and states intentions to join the mission, as they are involved too. Picard refuses since they attacked without provocation. He had not expected this..the Gorn are on the far side of the affected sectors, so it seems the Yridian's prediction is coming true. The whole galaxy will be involved, perhaps in petty squabbling or civil wars, and even the civilized Federation was no proof of peace in such an atmosphere, how he knew well with recent developments in the Federation. The Gorn are convinced to leave, in part by phasers brought to bear from the station and massed unallied vessels. The captain swears to gain information and abruptly warps away. Picard wonders aloud WHY and how the Gorn discovered the mission was set to leave, as Dr Crusher rushes to the bridge, having tended to wounded and querulous ambassadors.

An alarm sounds, a ship has slipped away unnoticed from the base. Worf has tracked transmissions from the ship to the Gorn. Picard barks out a quick greeting to the captain of the Feyman and asks if everything is aboard...with an affirmitive, Picard orders a pursuit course. After a brief pursuit and an exchange of fire, they learn its an old assisant to Professor Galen named Carlson, who left him after an argument over the use of the great discovery, who is piloting a cloaked ship. Again Picard is faced with his past, with the man who "replaced" him, but before he can tractor the ship in, it abruptly enters into vaguely transwarp-like energy surge and vanishes. Leaving many questions unanswered...

A meeting is held aboard the Enterprise. Both captains have been briefed. Picard talks with Captain Asaki of the Feynmen. While lightly armed, the science ship has been planned as a possible repository/tug for the artifacts as well as "wingman" in case of trouble for the Enterprise. They discuss the implications of the technology to be found and the affect it has on the galaxy. Asaki notes that if the Gorn come in force, or the ambassadors are at each others throats, there could be plenty of trouble ahead. The first order of business is a trail of possible courses a ship could have escaped undetected from archaeological vessels as the ship was stolen. A 3D map is projected, and more data uploaded to the Enterprise. She smiles and leaves the ship as the two starships streak for their destination.

There is a meeting before the first system is approached. Over 100 delegates and Enterprise crewman, including small cetacean species in tanks, and the odd avain hovering near lightened areas of gravity plates. The mission is outlined as a step by step: a systematic search of various, suspicious worlds. Rumblings of displeasure are heard. Everyone is anxious and not all agree with the plan. The Typhon representative exclaims that they should interrogate the Yridian (who is not present for safety), with much agreement in the ranks. He mentions sensor evidence but is lost in the fray. Picard takes control with a pervading sense of authority. They will orbit around the planet Timgor and begin a systematic sensor sweep as well as ground search with shuttles. Traces of propulsion systems unknown to them have been detected there, and it could have been the first stop in flight from the excavation of the stolen ark. The plan goes awry almost immediately. A Yridian scientist is murdered, possibly by a Fakai warrior, and a ship is detected stalking the Enterprise..readings are faint however, and no trace of the ancient ship is found. The only consolation is that there is a sign they are on the right track in the form of the shadowing ship, and more faint traces of a propulsion system of immense power as it enters an equivalent of warp, and leaves a subspace trail.

Riker plans a little diversion. As the ships leave Timgor, the Feynman veers towards a nearby moon, and takes up a polar orbit, obscuring any sensors of the other vessel, while the Enterprise heads for a more obvious course. The ship falls for the bait. It is a cloaked ship and it comes ever closer to the second Starfleet ship which it fails to detect. Fearing a trap the unknown vessel is cautious, it does not come too close, but without warning, captain Asaki speeds out from behind the Timgorian moon, with an expert precision it disables the ship. It is a wonder of technology....small but nothing like anyone has ever seen. The occupent is beamed over and the Feynman warps for a waiting E-E. Riker and Worf question the occupent for Picard, it is Galen's assistant Carlson once more. Apparently he HAS discovered something he is not telling, and his ship was a result. Only his tactical inexperience cost him the cat and mouse game. Carlson tells the Riker and his security officers nothing, but Picard talks with him alone, despite protess from Worf over the possibility of more secret alien technology posing a threat. He talks of old times with him and how it must have been, chasing around the universe..a romantic, free existence that Picard often yearns for in comparison to his more rigidly defined Starfleet exploration. Carlson goes on to explain he wanted so much more, not fame and money, but to use the technology to rival any species in power. "With this exotic nanotechnology I could send waves of machines across worlds bending them to my will and reshaping them in any image I choose. You know the samples Galen discovered Picard? Well everyone thought it was something different, a weapon, a source of energy, well they were right...it is ALL of those things, and even the Borg couldn't stop..us." Picard flinches..us? "You'll find out in time my friend." He casually sneers. Picard leaves the room, "What did Nu'Daq the Klingon say.." he thinks, "I wish it was a recipe for biscuits right now."

Geordi LaForge is in engineering monitoring strange subspace patterns possbily generated by the drive detected. It is not the same as Carlson's ship, so that's one worry out of the way. He decides to run a scan, and discovers to his amazement that the trace is a transwarp carrier wave. In effect, the mysterious technology piggybacks on top of regular subspace. Whoever he got it from, they have tricks not even the Borg have. He reports to Picard immediately.

Picard is in conference with the Yridian Ambassador Sedra. He mentions the technology and his scientists report back that the markings of the ship look stylized and non-functional, what's more they closely follow the few documentated images of the alien ark so far. Picard is shocked, but the 3D depictions are almost the same, expecially for triangular patterns on the hull. In addition, the bulkheads are generalized and do not follow a pattern as human ships do. They seems almost grown, yet the technology is fully mechanical. It is also seamless and perfect..no doubt nanotech constructed. It is obvious now that Carlson has found either the ship or the final resting place of the ship, and that he is involved in the theft somehow. The Yridian is anxious to question him, but Picard refuses. Sedra then suggest he is in league with the Gorn, a race perpetually itching for power. Again their meeting is interrupted...there is yelling outside the bridge, audio is being fed through the comm as delegates of alien species try to fight their way in. Other incidents with security are reported. Worf reports the aliens are trying to gain access to the ship in tow and want to be beamed. Others just want the Yridians dead once and for all. Picard orders anesthezine for the transporter attackers and he grabs a phaser himself to counter the threat outside the bridge. With force fields on there is little likelihood of breaking in, so a ship-to-ship tranpsort is accomplished as Geordi lowers part of a bulkhead shield. Worf, Riker and Data try to talk the enraged delegates, but to no avail. They stun several and capture the rest. The Fakai warrior is the instigator and he is sent to the brig, with several Satarrans in tow. Picard declares martial law. With a locked down ship, unknown stalker and artifact thieves, Picard has his hands full.

The Enterprise and the Feynman orbit the next planet on their agenda. It is a gigantic brown dwarf, and it seethes with gasses and winds gusting up to 800 mph. No one sees a likelihood of a ship on the surface, so an orbital search is conducted. There is a trace, another small cloaked ship is detected in low orbit, much easier to find than their shadow by Carlson due to the radiation of the brown dwarf. It is a science ship of undetermined origin caught in the act of researching the planet, though not of the sophistication of the Carlson's ship. It has no chance of escape. Worf and an away team beam aboard to capture the crew, but gain something far more valuable. Evidence of searching for more DNA. As Crusher and science teams search for a connection to other species DNA patterns and the missing ark, Picard mulls over the "conspiracy". It involves multiple planets apparently and at least one Earth man. How diabolicaland far reaching can it be?

The E-E leaves the scene once again, having learned the organic samples have detected what may be the progenitors of almost all species in the Milky Way, and who knows where else. These new humanoid crewman were still trying to gain information on the ship they probably stole. It is another part of the trail, but what exactly are they following now? No sign of the actual ark has been detected and the trail is growing cold on that end. The delegates are getting restless too. The crew discovers that the scientists aboard the alien ship have commited suicide, no further information will come from them. And then a further shock: Data reports 3 Gorn battleships at a distance, but closing. They must smell blood at the end of the trail to bring that much firepower. Cleary Carlson warned them about the mission, and didn't want them to find the source of the ark theft. Picard warns Asaki of the danger. So the Gorn are directly involved too?

Picard has no choice to head to the final planet that the thieves could have escaped to without detection. It is another huge brown dwarf orbiting a far off pulsar and it is much deeper into space, almost penetrating the beta quadrant. Most sensors are down, and other readings and communication are sporadic around such an enormous radio source. One thing is for sure, the Gorn are near. The Enterprise surveys another unlikely planet to exist near for survival of normal life, yet it was more likely for the stealth it offered would-be criminals. A dampening field adds weight to this conclusion. Picard feels this must be the place.

The pulsing star is bright...almost too bright. Data detects an occultation of the pulsar...with amazement the crew stares into infinite space. They notice the slight dimming of the pulsar on every rotation. Picard consults Asaki about the far off orbit of the pulsar, and the dimming with few conclusions apparent. Carlson is brought on the bridge. Picard demands to know what he is seeing. Carlson is evasive, and tells him its his future...out here on the obscure rim. Again Picard demands. Only then do the sensors detect looming objects...huge half mile long battleships, larger than the E-E itself, slow, and bristling with disruptor projectors..sharp prowed nacelles, with a hint of olive drab and streaks of green. Ablative armor, thick and worn..glinting with pulsar reflected brilliance. The Gorn have played their hand. It is the only thing that could distract the Starfleet crew from the mysteries of the pulsar. Jaarkgon the Gorn captain, hails the Enterprise. "Captain, you and I know we are here for the sssame information, we both know the power behind it. I demand the releassse of Carlson, the human, and we at leassst will ssshare in an exchange of information, if not, I will cut my lossses and dessstroy you and all your collected knowledge, the choicce is yours. We are at the end of the line, or is it a beginning..."

Putting aside his confusion over the remark (why would the Gorn need more information if they stole the ship?) Picard remembers similar words at the ultimate meeting at Vilmor years ago. A chance for peace, and renewed hope. Since then there have been millions of deaths, and intragalactic war. Perhaps the galaxy has to learn the hard way. Picard flashes a signal to Data..he secretly signals the Feynman. With an antimatter spread masking the flight, the two ships head for the distant pulsar...the Gorn ships fire, blazing with green phased energy hundreds of gigawatts in strength and sonic disruptors that rake the shields. Yet even this power pales in comparison to the awesome beauty and strength of the pulsar, once a promising star in its own right. The slow Gorn vessels follow as the Starfleet ships maneuver to see the objects in front of the pulsar....a wonderous sight it is: a dozen vessels the size of moons. Detailed and shimmering, frozen seemingly in time.

Carlson laughs at the Gorn and Picard, because the joke is on all of them...wave after wave of Orion ships and Yridian battlecruisers sweep in, weapons firing. One battleship briefly shimmers and sizzles before its shields collapse under a torrent of withering fire. The Gorn were only a distraction, the real goal was deflection on the part of Carlson. Picard realizes this now..the Orion Syndicate and the Yridians...they were in league all along. Sedra was a cunning devil, observing his prey from close by and under their very aegis..ready to disstract and thwart the mission at any opportunity! And this was the prize, ultimate knowledge and the power of the ancients, a species that was far older than anyone imagined.

The Enterprsie drove deeper towards the pulsar, to the Enterprise crew's horror the Feynman flickered and blew into a stream of component molecules that trailed behind them at top impulse speed. The bridge crew is aghast, but presses on. Picard hoped to at least hide from the combined might of the Orions and Yridians by using the jamming/dampening fields and the pulsar's interference itself. But where? Data points to the huge moon-sized ships, and suggests a series of maeuvers to evade, and then finally hide in a low orbit. Another Gorn ship flared, keeled over at top impulse and dived over, creating shadows in the pulses of light and energy from the star. It blew into a million pieces also. Picard never thought he'd see such magnificent ships disappear so quickly. But the onslaught was relentless. No less than 25 enemy ships were chasing them, the Enterprise managed to score only a few hits. Finally it reached an area with no sensor contact whatsoever. Close to the rear of the huge alien ships and alone now, safe for the moment thanks to Data's plan, but for a megalomaniac aboard and frightened delegates, Picard called for the Yridian Ambassador. He was not speaking, but told them all they wanted to know by the silence except, "how"? Carlson elaborated. It was only the might of these ships that he eventually tracked down that led him to his current state. "They are a perfect synergy of the micro and macro, and with them my allies and I could take over the whole galaxy, whole planets could be reconstructed to our needs with frightening precision and ease and enemies reduced to so much inert matter. All species are indeed linked, but the only thing we want from them is control. No human has ever had so much. The Yridians are a second rate power but will become gods, and the the Orions..well lets say they'll have all the material goods they could want."

As the Enterprise slowly drifted in stealth mode, another thing became obvious, the dimming pulsar could not have just been caused by these massive dozen starships. A mass loomed, and as the E-E came out from behind the ships, they saw the ultimate in discoveries...a Dyson Sphere. It was smaller than the one they had discovered earlier, but bore a resemblence. It was still far from the Pulsar, but nevertheless it was huge. A Gorn signal came in, it was the Gorn ship taking up position next the to Enterprise. It was all garbled excited chatter. Nothing could be heard clearly, though Picard got the gist of it. There was to be a temporary peace between them. Then one of the big ark ships moved. It nearly crushed the Gorn battleship like so much wood. "My God, they've learned to operate them!" Picard exclaimed. Phaser fire flared, orange and green flame beamed like stabbing knives towards the alien structure to no effect. Behind it was revealed the ark artifact they had so long sought, but there was no time for excitment. The prisoners were ushered off the bridge, and Picard signaled the Gorn as best he could, "We'll make a last stand at the Sphere!" The Gorn acknowledged.

Yes, the ship did move, with all the majesty of eons ago as it seeded countless oceans and protolife with the surging energy of life, bonding amino acids into proteins and force evolving species into sentience. The aliens were not species-centric, not only would humans and humanoids join in the party but all life. After all, who wants to be alone in the universe? Who were these progenitors? They were in fact the Preservers, a race of already known to the Federation through ancient artifacts. Picard new an earlier Enterprise had discovered soem from perusing hte Enterprise's records, but their reach was greater than anyone could have known. For eons they sampled their earlier work and even protected alien life they seeded. And then they disappeared.

Picard and crew learned all this as he had landed on the far side, evading Yridian destroyers along the way. With none to subtle protest from Riker, Picard took a shuttle down, and landed near an awesome portal the size of a large continent. A small exotic structure stood near the entrance, and Picard stepped through the doorway as if he were meant to. Riker, Geordi and Data followed..how curious it was for Laforge to be on the surface of so large an engineering structure yet again, the last one nearly cost his life as well as the Enterprise-D. The alien's interactive holodeck computers were also curiously easy to tap for information. Data monitored all activity on his tricoder and managed to gain a lot of information along the way to be sorted through later. The Preservers, as they may be called, eventually overextended themselves and longed for rest. They appeared to the Klingons, Cardassians, Humans and Romulans as humanoid at Vilmor, but their true form was all together different, and they appear differently to any and all species that tracks the evidence they sought to lead them with their genetic codes. Not only were they lonely, but their quest for knowledge had been insatiable, now, they simply want to rest, over 8 billion years of good work will do that to you. And who could blame them. Picard couldn't. But what of their current dilema?

The computer holomatrix surged and twinkled. Specks of light flashed and the crew was transported to the Enterprise. The Preservers! They had been awakened. The Orion-Yridian captured Preserver ship flashed a bright green as it appeared before them, and weapons fire from it hit both the Enterprsie and the carbon neutronium hull of the Dyson Sphere where Enterrpsie crew had just been. The crew braced for impact. It was nothing like they had ever seen in detail, even the Dyson Sphere was obviously more advanced in form than the earlier version they discovered. The tricorder had gained more data, and Data explained how this was one of the last Dyson Spheres, more abounded, but only a few were the last portals to another "plane of existence", which were actually other dimensions. At least that's the best determination the tricorder and universal translator could make..the language was extremely complex. The ships were there for them to make the occasional visit back, but none have ever returned in 3 billion years, and still the tech was advanced. The E-E was hit again by the captured ark. The brave Gorn captain swooped his vessel from nowhere, and slammed torpedoes into the craft, again to no effect. Yridian and Orion vessels swarmed for the final kill like gathering hornets.

In an instant the Dyson Sphere powered up. The Preservers by computer proxy, were not pleased. Automatic defenses were engaged with the hit on the surface of it. The immediate culprits were destroyed, as well as several Orion ships in close range. The ark craft were rendered inoperative along with the rest of the pursuing enemy fleet, and a hush fell over the battle scene as message from the ages flashed across all screens..at last a vague majestic outline of the Preservers real form appeared: "All glorious creatures. We have given you all gift..a gift of thought, of understanding, and most of all life. A countless majority of species in this galaxy have we assisted in this way. Recent events demonstrate our hopes for you have not been fulfilled. This is distressing to us. Know this, we will not directly interfere, but if our influence is of any importance, let this repository of knowledge guide you...we will provide this one last spark..in hope of finally generating species worthy of joining us here, where we are at peace, but alone." The message receded and disappeared.

Bursting with his new paradigm of galaxial knowledge Picard finally felt full relief in Professor Galen's work. Surely Carlson was only an exception to the rule of civilization and they would work to learn what they could of what this race of titans left behind. He would return and make the information known, and not classify it to the general public as Starfleet had done. Picard had faith in his own human species, they could do it alone he was sure, but who were they to turn down a helping hand? All the races of the galaxy had much to rejoice in. Any petty scores that the delegates or other races had would be of little consequence, there was far more to consider now. Already several delegates pledged support and a summit would be called on how to make best use of this Sphere. It would certainly take ages to decipher all of the information from the Dyson Sphere. And as they learned together they never knew WHO might be watching. Picard stood and tugged at his unifrom as he always did when it cinched at his waist..and gave the signal to engage.

I would throw budget and mass appeal to the flippin' wind. It would be a galactic threat in epic proportions that required the crews of TNG, DS9 and VOY to resolve. The threat would move backward thru time to the TOS era with the Enterprise and Excelsior crews pitching in. And finally during the ENT time period with good old Daniels showing up to help Archer and company finish it off.

Running time: 5 to 6 hours.

Damn right.

I remember discussing this a few years ago with a friend and we started to scribble down ideas - but we never had a complete concept, just a few plot points and two alternative movies which would both form a book end for TNG. The most fleshed out was ST:Ascension.

Star Trek: Ascension was the first concept, it would have featured Picard, Sisko and Janeway - with the rest of the TNG cast appearing at the start when we witness the retirement of the Enterprise E, with Riker appearing towards the end of the movie.

Given that the film uses the Borg and Q, there is no need for any big name star - but executives would want a 'name' as the new Captain of the new Enterprise and so Salma Hayek or Michelle Rodriguez would be sought out to play the role of Captain Torres (or Hernandez - the point is, the character's supposed to be Hispanic).

We open in the future, Picard is promoted to Ambassador after the retirement of the Enterprise E. A year or two later and Captain Torres (Salma Hayek) takes command of the Enterprise F which Picard is onboard for the launch ceremony when the ship is dispatched, by Admiral Janeway, to investigate the sightings of Borg deep in the Gamma Quadrant. Torres gets some crew reinforcement at DS9 - including picking up her First Officer, Commander Nog - and Picard has an encounter with Sisko in the wormhole where the older man is told that he and Sisko aren't that different. In the Gamma Quadrant, the Enterprise meets up with Odo and a squadron of Dominion fighters and encounter the Borg - but the Enterprise defeats the Borg and an away team board the cube and discover that Borg tech is being used by an insectoid race nicknamed by Torres as the Cy.

The Cy, however, have accidentally awoken other Borg Cubes and whilst the Cy abduct Picard in an effort to better merge with the Borg technology (it's Picard becoming Locutus again that reactivates the other Borg), Torres, Odo and Nog try to rescue him.

They trail the Cy Cube to a desert planet where they do recover him but at the point they recover him, the Borg turn up prepared to decimate the Cy and the Federation.

It's Borg Cube vs Borg Cube.

Titan later turns up to help the Enterprise which is crippled as they try to convert Picard back to being Human. However, Picard and the crew meet with Q in the Sickbay - and Picard ends up evolving to being a Q.

It's a fairly fanwanky idea, but we were several years younger than we are now.

My favourite. Something for everyone. Almost Biblical in scope. Count me in... just as soon as I can bankroll you the $200 million to make it, we'll get cracking! ;)
